This is a tough piece to find. I picked this off of Ebay a couple of days ago and it arrived today. It has the Rivarossi drive train and the rare Tyco 630 nose with the built in steps. It also has the SF Yellow stripe down the front of the nose. This runs barely as the coupling on the drive shaft is cracked and it slips when it turns. Anyone have an idea of what year this was produced?

As per Tony L's site at http://goingincirclez.com/TycoTrains/Guide/5 , 1973 or '74.

Way to go AF Kid! I have an SF and ICG S630 Alcos posted in the "nice lash-up" post, both leading the pack.

Nice find. I love the way those Rossi sideframes look on it. A little CA sould keep the universal from slipping.

The side frames maybe Rivarossi but the base is marked Tyco Made in Hong Kong. I think it takes a coupler holder that attaches to the front of the truck frame. It has a few dings but it is the only one I have seen for sale.

The drive system is quite unique in this engine. Its amazing how many shafts are used. Then that gear box, looks like a RC stadium truck's transmission! I do believe the U25C and K-M Hydraulic diesels used a very similar drive system.

I'm curious as to the performance...
just me Ray... and just because I have Tyco doesn't mean I am not a model railroader

Justin, if only. The KM and the E8 shared a similar rear truck drive with only two powered axles. They ran very well as long as the traction tires were good, but they would have been a lot better with the U25C's 8 wheel drive.

It ran like crap. The main coupling has a crack in it now it slips. The typical Rivarossi motor works fine.

Welcome to the club, AF Kid!

I was watching that auction as well. Sorry it's not in as nice of shape as we had both hoped. At least you paid a decent price. :)

As I said, the slipping universal is an easy fix.
