One of many projects I've started.

Black. Tuxedo scheme. I need to add the paper element filter to the roof. Already painted the frame. And when I get around to it, add some aftermarket handrails. Got a micro mark HM-5 motor for it. It's practically a drop in replacement.

Outstanding! I always liked the AHM GP-18 as a rebuild project. There are so many projects that can be done with it. And ranging from the very simple to the extreme. I have rebuilt it into various versions of the GP7, GP9, and GP18s. You can easily replace the short hood and cab with ones from a Tyco GP20 to get a lo-hood version as well.
I look forward to seeing your additions! I have thought to make a couple IC rebuilds for my road. I plan to paint them in PNC colors and use them as rentals.

Glad you mentioned that , Hypo. A low nose GP18 is also another project I've started in N&S colors. The original Norfolk and Southern which operated in North Carolina had low nose GP18's. I took an AHM shell and mated a TYCO GP20 cab and nose to it. Again, it's a partially completed project. Incidentally, those low nose units were acquired by the Southern Railway and converted to high-nose such as the one I'm modeling in the picture.

Those 18s used by the original N+S were rather cool! The bright colors contrasted well will Southern's black. Don't forget to shorten the fuel tank. Let me know if you need photos! I can scan the section out of the GP18 book by Diesel Era. The book has a chapter on the units in use by the original N+S. Did you need a dynamic brake blister to go with your Southern 18?
I also want to try making an old Copper Basin lo-nosed unit. I just like it for the cactus emblem.

Did a little more with a GP18. The pilots on these are disgustingly too small. So I added scale size pilots.

Nice work. Swapping the pilots is a great idea. I have filled in and detailed the original pilots on a few of those. Swapping the pilot like you have done looks alot easier.

Paul, NICE work! I picked up this posting from one you added the link to it in. I got a few GP-18 projects done in much the same means you did!
Here is one of my renditions:

THEN, to really modify these loco's I made this:

ALL from a single AHM GP18!
Then I have to say, want bigger stuff? The ALCO 3 axle unit, I believe its the C-630, makes a wonderful base to an MT-6 slug!

ALOT can be done with those older units, and as you know and can see, look really good at the same time!
And before I go and leave it at this, YES every slug I have built, is powered!

What did you use for a motor in the Chessie slug? Not the original AHM motor??
The MT-6 slug is an interesting looking creature.

Paul, YEP! The factory motors were used in ALL the slugs I've built. I lower the motor into the fuel tank further in any case or way I can when needed but believe it or not, you know how that fuel tank has that interior frame work that the clip snaps into? REMOVE it. Then glue the fuel tank in its place, SOLID! Mount the motor to the inside of the fuel tank with Silicone, OR a type of removable glue of your choice, hold it upright and true 90 degrees to the top shell. Add your wires from the trucks and off to the yard tracks he's ready for assignments!
The MT-6, that's a BEAST! It took a bit of work to get an IHC ALCO C-628 it was, (I think I said C-630 above) to become what you see as my MT-6....That slug, even has custom turned flywheels in it!

Yep, that is the old Bachmann BQ23-7. I detailed the shell some and then dropped it onto a current Bachmann B23-7 chassis.

Hypoponera,
I just had to comment! I love the looks of the BQ23-7 so...... My favorite Bachmann from the old days!
I too, have a few detailed versions.....see:

I detailed mine as well, BUT, mine is not on a Bachmann frame! I mounted mine to an Athearn UboatB frame, with all its bells and whistles, but not DCC or have sound so,..... Its straight DC Cab Control right now....IF I can find a dual model decoder with or without sound, I would add it to this one just to be able to run it at the club!

Hey Paul, ever get the GP18 done? I'd be interested in seeing what all you've done to it, those loco's have serious custom abilities!

Nice slugs. To build one of the GP-18 slugs, did you cut down an AHM model? Not to downplay your work (because it appears you repainted it better than factory), but did you just cut the hood down to half height, or is that an entirely new hood piece on the slug? I just dont' see how you got the sides smooth like that.
Is there still room under the slug hood for an original AHM GP-18 motor and drivetrain under there?
I think the next GP-18 I see at the flea market will be the next victim 'volunteer' for such a project.
Someone give me some help; I need to stop being an armchair modeler and cut something up already!

Have not done anything with it. I keep starting projects and get about 2/3 through it and go on to something else. I do have some Precision Scale handrail stanchions, so I need to bend up some handrails. Thanks for asking, maybe that'll spur me on to finish it.

Started my second GP18 project many months ago but, I got some neat details parts recently. These are some stainless steel photoetch radiator grilles. They are made by Plano. Fantastic looking detail. They even have the tiny condensation drain holes and rivets. Plano has a bunch of photoetch detail parts.
