I don't know SCVR66, I'd have to see the REST of your collection to determine that!
Oh, in case you meant MY rare engines? heh heh, well, I don't know about "rare", but I like this one, which seems to be scarce and high priced these days.

I acquired this unit, I think it's Roco made, a BR 49 glass dome German tram, off Ebay some years ago for about $46, just Watched an auction for a similar unit in blue livery go for $244. The Roco units actually already had passengers mounted inside. That is very expensive to do, when 5 or 6 scale people are around 7-10 dollars. Adds up quickly! Anyway, while a rather eclectic piece, and doesn't fit ANY of my other collection pieces, I just liked the glass greenhouse look, so it's one of my favorite pieces, and having been DCC'ed, and I just fixed the traction tires, it's a decent runner now, too.

My rarest would have to be this Marklin O1 in HO scale from about 1939...many of them have fallen victim to zinc-mites, the crystallization of the metal that literally has them crumbling before your eyes with no cure for it....

Deemed "European junk", it was rescued before it was going to be tossed in a dumpster by the club it was donated to, along with a boxful of other stuff. It is in very good condition and runs very well, dubbed the "Sparkle Train" by my son for its impressive display of sparks at every switch point.

rarest of the rare....at least for me...this is the Jonan 50 ton diesel similar to the one that ran out on Southern Pacific's Owens Valley branch (which was Narrow gauge)...took me 15 years to find this one, after I had purchased a NWSL model which ran like crap due to the drive system. sold the NWSL one a long time ago after hearing about this critter, it's standard guaged like the prototype after it was sold

A little more history on the actual 50 ton loco, GE only built 3 and they were all from spare parts of their more popular 70 ton model 2 went to Panama and one went to SP (and the reason it did is because the sale of the 3rd to Costa rica(?) was sacked due to the bannana strike that year...
SP #1, also known as the little giant soldered on for 4 years in the owens valley till the abandonment and scrapping of the line in 1960, and wound up somewhere in Mexico where it was standard guaged and still remains today....several groups have been trying as of recent to bring the little bugger home...
just me Ray... and just because I have Tyco doesn't mean I am not a model railroader

Frank's words directly above are pretty sage...
...In that vein then, the rarest and most dear locomotives in my collection are the ones I have painted myself, especially these:

Yeah, I could always make more... but that takes time, and nothing beats the satisfaction of a one-off. In that sense they are one-of-a-kind and irreplaceable, and perhaps may be more cherished by family members someday.
(The design of those had its genesis here on this forum way back in the day...)
In the "mass produced may not be rare but hard to find" realm, Tyco no less, for me it has to be:

As uncommon as this one is, there are arguably rarer Tyco locomotives - several of which I own - but you just can't beat the NP Shark for dapper imaginative style. Not only is this a loco only Tyco would dare come up with, that lime green metallic is absolutely sublime in person. As to its rarity, I see them come up maybe once - no more than twice - per year at best; certainly far less common than other stuff conventionally considered "rare"... if slightly more often than other items...
On the "certified rarity" side of the hobby, I would say the Penn Line Crusaders I've had the pleasure and honor of restoring will always hold a place in my affections.

I have stated before I know conrail never had steamers, if the they did I'm sure they wouldn't look like the models, but I definatly want the 0-4-0, I've never seen mantuas version except in a picture by mantua. The ahm one is Around every now an then. Wait they made Amtrak steamers?!! I'll look for one of those too then, I'd like a chess steamer cause I love the colors but I like the mantua version best. I like these steamers cause they're unusual and harder to find

spiderj76,
These two loco's of yours... They were first Test-beds before being bought by a few railroads. GP40X's were tested by those roads for quite a while before EMD/GM took them back.
That Hi-Nose GP40X... that's one of a kind!
Awesome locomotives, people!
I got something in the mail I will shoot in the next pm... I'll put it/them here.

Let me know if I am pushing the limits...
Rare and never seen before locomotives. Great efforts were made by someone who knew what they were doing... uh, as long as you accept a Mercury Cadillac...

I'd like you to notice all the brass details on this painted, old-school Athearn GP9, jewels, mu & signal lines, etc... real lift rings, the brass pilot... Duluth South Shore & Atlantic

And this nicely done Canadian National Baldwin Shark

Without doing any research, y'all'd say that these are very well done. I bought them second hand... at different times.
I knew about the CN Shark... Not even in sergeant stripes did they exist, except on a ROCO model.
The Duluth South Shore & Atlantic GP9 I bought way up here in BC, Canada... all that magnificant work, the DB blister is also brass, rear brake wheel... like I said, most every detail you could apply to this old-school locomotive shell, the headlight, inside even has a brass slotted fixture for the wired bulb so as to not expose the light through the cab windows... What's the mystery with this $50 detail job GP9 that I bought for $20?
The DSS&A never, ever had a EMD product. When the Soo Line absorbed the DSS&A, they were disappointed only Baldwin, and BLH locomotives were owned.
John ps... so, these are two locomotives, as they are, "one of a kinds. "
I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

The Toonerville was imported by Kemtron and the last one I saw listed on eBay sold for almost $600. I saw mine listed incorrectly and made the seller an offer and pretty much therefore stole mine.

That GP9 up there fron the DSSA? I found a plain old Athearn GP7 not unlike that one where someone in its history had done the same thing - every last possible brass and painted detail he could cram on, proper canadian bell, everything. Painted for the TH&B. Ten bucks, three hours, and one thoroughly astonished train show checkout guy later, it's one of the best in my fleet. If only I could finish the weathering the guy started.

The K-11! One of the very, very few non-brass, non-USRA, non-PRR Pacifics in HO. I wanted one SO bad as a kid, in the 90s, looking at the ads in MR, but couldn't afford one (as cheap as they were, in retrospect!) Fast forward to 2010, I had gotten an H9 and put it together, and the next one was going to be a K-11...and then Bowser quit making kits. MOTHER BUGGER. XD
The K-11 is actually one of the few Bowser designs in the line...the PRR engines mostly originated from Penn Line. It was their second locomotive kit to be introduced.

You got $46 for that?! That's amazing considering how much detail is on it.

Oh, dang, where do I even start with this. I have a number of trains I would call "rare" although I'm not sure what I'd choose. Okay, first off, I have a Revell H0 scale Great Northern car dated 1956 with the box that I got for about $6 at a show.
My next one is an old Mantua/Tyco Booster in US Army livery which is in very sad shape.
My next one is an Arnold N scale train set from 1963-1964 and it works.
The next one is a Mantua Dixie Belle train set in Rio Grande livery from 1985. Not 100% sure if it's rare or not but I don't see them too often.
This last one is probably my favorite, a Mantua Pacific from the mid to late 1950's. Again, not 100% sure if it's that rare or not but I know it's not too common. Runs great, too.

Not sure about the rare bit, but my favorite( for now), is my $40 (postage included) International Models 4-6-0 brass locomotive. Purchased on eBay as an "N" scale locomotive.

Oh, yeah. I forgot another "rare" locomotive I have. It's an Athearn 60th anniversary H0 scale GP40X unit from, well, 2007 that I got for $30 in great shape with the box. Very nice model.

| Thanks Top. Do you by any chance have copies of the documentation that came with it? I would love to get a copy of it.
