Hi everyone. I recently picked up a giant box of trains at a train show for only $30. I was amazed to see was in there because most of the old boxcars could have easily sold for $30 separately! It was a great find. Anyways, I was looking through it today and found some old Tyco boxcars which seem to be mechanized. Can anyone tell me what they do and how they worked? Maybe I can repair them.

The boxcar had a figure (always goes missing) and when power is applied to the contacts, it works like a soleniod pushing little boxes out the side. Then the log and ore car dump works like a electro-magnet drawing the magnet down towards the coil thus unloading the logs/ore. The button is a push button style and you push it a few times and WHOOLA! It unloads. I have a hoard of those log and ore dumps. I have a log dump set from every era if Tyco! Also, the trap door atop of the roof of the boxcar allows loading of the little boxes.

Just clean those copper contact strips behind the actuator's parts ( plastic part with 2 "fingers") and the contact "fingers" face. Make sure the log and ore dump car's magnets (on car's bottom/floor) are positioned correctly. Just a lil' cleaning will have them unloading in no time. It takes 16 volts AC (not DC) to operate.
