I got this is a deal and cannot find any markings on it. It is belt driven with strange little head light. I don't have a tender but if I can find out what make it is I should be able to find a tender in my junk box.
Any help would be great.

It's just an O-ring, Ken. If you still have the old one, you can go to Home Depot and pick out the right size. I did the same for an old Revell switcher.

I was going to guess Lionel just because of the motor but the cab number also looks like a Lionel font. A nice find.
Ken that building or photo in the background is interesting, how'd you come by that one?

I hate to say wasn't that steamer offered by Athearn in the 60's? LOOK at the motor! SAME as the one used in the B&M 4-6-2 from the same era!

John,

Nope, that's the Lionel motor. They were in everything from their Husky to their Pacifics. The Athearn motor was the unblackened weak open frame Hi-F motor.

Irv didn't have enough patience with steam. If he had waited a few years until they came out with their much stronger Jet motors (with the oval ring magnet), they would have performed much better. The Hi-F motors were weak in the early geared diesels, too.

Gareth,

My pics are to show the Hi-F motor that was used in their 60's steam. Here's a diagram of the Jet motor. Must be a drawing from the 60's, because it uses the metal mounting plate instead of the rubber mounts.

Nelson, I confused the 0-6-0 with the 0-4-2T......

I have both a Lionel 0-6-0, and then the 0-4-2T by Athearn...... The frames look REALLY similar tho....Amazing how much of that was done, but I don't recal seeing the "Hi-Fi" motor having an angle mount on it.......

Good thought tho, I wonder if the jet motor armature would fit the old Hi Fi? Interesting as if I recall the armature was the issue on the Hi-Fi motors! I might have to give that a try!

John, they re-tooled the front end bell for their steamers to put the motor on the diagonal.

The Jet armature wouldn't fit, in fact the Hi-F armature is very short. It's almost a pancake motor. The only way to improve them is with a neodymium magnet transplant, which I have yet to do to one of these.

Nelson,
I'll have to see what I might have for Armatures, as I might have something to fit in one of the Hi-Fi's....Hmmmmm
