I think I know why I stuck to Rivarossi articulated's.
Finally pulled out a circa 1982 Mantua HO 2-6-6-2 with tender that I was given a while back because it 'wouldn't go'
A quick look shows a broken black wire down on the front drive unit.
Now, to get the shell off so I can work towards getting at the screw/tag/wire that is the culprit.
Had a look at HOSeeker & there are 12 pages of diagrams, but I am probably skipping through the 'how to get the shell off' section. Short attention span.
Compared to the beloved Rivarossi 2-8-8-2 this looks a bit of a p-g to pull apart.
Anyone done one? Can point me to some pictures or hand holding guidelines?
Thanks TE

The boiler is held on with one screw in the smoke stack and may have a srew or two under the cab or fire box area. Get a screw and nut ( a 2-56 combo ) to hold the front steam chest down. If not and something happens, it'll come off and make getting the rods back into place a nightmare!

Well I took to it with the screwdrivers.
Nothing down the smoke stack.
1 screw each side underneath, right at the back of the cab.
& 1 screw each side, underneath in the gap between the front & rear under frames.
You can just get a small screwdriver in there. That allows you to lift the shell away, but the MO194 front steam pipe is being a PIA by holding the shell partially in place . There is also the wire from the screw in the top of the front underframe, up to the light bulb holding the shell .
I think I am going to replace & lengthen the wire that broke at that front underframe screw. It is a straight run back to one of the brushes. I can twist the shell to one side enough to loosen the screw & reattach the wires.
Some careful soldering needed. TE
