I've been searching for a low-nose gp-7 or -9, preferrably without dynamic brakes. Does anyone know of such a beast existing in HO scale? I've never seen one, other than ones having been cut up and modified.

I'm not sure if all those have a dynamic brake blister--I'm pretty sure the Cox one does. I suppose that would be a relatively simple modification if I could find the detail part. I've been tempted to use a Tyco/Mantua GP-20 shell to suffice. I'll post a pic as to what I'm looking to do.

I'll need to look for that kit, but would still need to get rid of Athearn's dynamic brakes. I do have some Athearn shells to use.

All three locos Ken mentioned are low nosed, but have dynamic brake blisters. But they will be easier to modify then the Athearn shell.

There is no "kit" to chop the nose of the Athearn loco. You will need to do some serious plastic surgery. Not terribly hard if you are careful and measure well. Then you still need to remove the BD blister.

If you start with the Walthers or Model Power locos, the nose has already been chopped. You just need to carve away the BD blister. Then patch the damage and sand. Much easier then chopping the nose.

Another option would be to start with an AHM GP18. It comes sans BD blister. You still need to chop the nose though. Then you need to back date it to a -7 or -9. On the plus side, the hood does have scale width as opposed to Athearn, Cox, MP, and Walthers versions.

Step one-Find a shell-low nose
Step two-Find an engine with no DBs.
Step three, cut out the DB Blister and trade out.

Thanks, All, for the suggestions. I suppose I could also use the rooftop area of a Tyco GP-20 to replace a db blister--but only if I start with a similar-width shell.

One other consideration: it would be far easier (IMO) to patch and scratchbuild the smooth, boxy, plain non-DB area of the long hood, than it would be to build and match the complex angles, curves, and contours of a chopped nose - and the resultant, required cab front. It will still take some effort and patience, but not enough to be impossible, and no more difficult than trying to cut and splice parts from other units.
