Has anyone come across a staple, the kind you use to fasten paper together or mitred picture frames that are small enough to pass for HO scale rolling stock stirrups or locomotive ones?
So far the smallest I've seen is 3/16th" across the crown. That scales out at approx 16" wide. Sounds about right.
Thanks, Gareth

The ones I used for the pilot grabs on my AHM Center Cab rebuild were from Walmart, in the office supplies aisle- the generic brand they sell in a small white box. These are rectangular in profile, but beefier than regular ones. The Swingline extra long staples, used for stapling thicker amounts of paper are similar, I believe.

Hey Ron:
Can you measure the "width" (crown) of those staples for me?
Thanks, -Gareth

Will do so this evening , Gareth, when I get home from work. I will try and send an image of the box of staples as well.
I will also try to do a close up image of the staple(s)

One other item: Office Depot high capacity staples have a longer leg- they are 5/16th inch (7.94mm), according to the box, with a chisel point, than standard sized staples. I found that underdrilling the hole size just a tiny bit, say the difference between a 70 and 76 mini drill bit (by hand, of course), enabled me to secure the staple point into each hole without CA glue.
I then trimmed the back ends (unless this is not needed for clearance) with a nipping plier- and then, applied a toothpick dot of CA on each just to be safe.

It just dawned on me that you may be asking for the width of the staple, not the leg length.
That 5/16th inch refers to the leg. The image on the box, at actual size, measures 1/2 inch across.

Hey Ron:
have you got a pic of the staples installed?
1/2" would be way out of scale. At 3/16th" the smallest I've found it scales out at approx 16" in full size.

Hey Ken:
I'm aware of those but they are about .19c per stirrup. Because they are Hobby manufactured specific the price is inflated. If you're going to do a bunch of rolling stock I was thinking Staples might be a money saver. I think it would depend on what you were going to add them to.

trouble with staples is that straight on ok for a cheap car,but if its a more expensive car i would feel cheap using staples after the maker went to all that trouble to get it right, the profile would be wrong, check these out ken http://www.enginehouseservices.com/products/STRAIGHT-STIRRUP-STEPS_10-PCS-_-FREIGHT-CAR-DETAILS-_-HO-Scale.html i use staples for grab irons though

The first image in the Loose Ends Forum, under my "Siouxlake's AHM Center Cab Rebuild 2" entry shows the pilot of the lower deck of the AHM center Cab with the Walmart staples applied and painted.
I will check those particular ones, generate an image or two and reply on here later this evening.

hi Ron;
I was referring to stirrup steps not the grabs.

Sorry for the confusion, but just to put my info to rest, the Walmart staples are also 1/2 wide as are the Office Depot ones, but a bit longer-3/8 inch (10mm). The box is white with " @The Office" as the trade name, and the staples are described as " heavy duty staples". I wasn't looking for fidelity to prototype on that Center Cab diesel, as it is a synthetic creation with no actual heritage, so I used what I thought was functional.
I tried...
