Last year, I picked up on a tip from a modeler who had an LED structure lighting article in RMC. He picked up an inexpensive box of warm white 5mm LEDs on a string from Walgreens for about $5.00.

I ran out, got the same and still have 35 left, as I have used a number of them already in various projects.

The end is flat with a cone diffuser built into the plastic lens. You can cut or sand ( I recommend sawing with a gent's saw or Atlas track saw, then sanding with 400 wet/dry) that end cone off for a more centralized light pattern, as the cone creates a darker-lit circle when left on the end and lit, diffusing the light to the edges and sides of the LED.

I was at Walgreens today and saw the exact same box of 50 on a string for the same price!

I have used these, with black shrink wrap on the side of the LED, in larger structures(HO)
And in my current center cab project.

If anyone has found smaller 3 mm LEDs like this as Christmas lights, please let me know. It's a bit hard to take the colored cover plastic off one of the other styles in the store to check them out.

Hope this helps.

Ron, it seems like all the LED strings I see are blue/white, which would only look good as a strobe. I bought 100 LED's a few years back from a guy in China that turned out to be blue/white, because the photo he had made them look like warm white.

I too would like to find 3mm LED Christmas lights, but I doubt they'll ever use them, since 5mm is plenty small for that purpose.
