I saw these almost everyday as I crossed the tracks to walk to elementary school. This was one of the first engines I bought when I came back to the hobby.

This was an ebay purchase last week. I got this and a BL2 for $10. Both were in the box, but this one appears to be like new. The motor had fallen out of its bracket and one of the driveshafts was out of place, but it was easy to put back together.

I'll save the BL2 for later.

This is my LOTW:
It is a custom built brass 0-6-0 with what appears to be Varney drivers, motor & steam chest:

Here is another view:

Gareth,
That's not a Prairie. It is a Mantua all brass 2-8-0 Reading Consolidation. It dates from about 1939.

Right, I thought the rear wheel was smaller and on a trailing truck. The bloated firebox is sure characteristic of that Gen of Mantua.

My LOTW is an NFL Superbowl Express , Mantua Made in China, circa 1993 printed on the bottom. Been watching for one of these, finally got one reasonable. Condition appears to be near mint, haven't tried to run it yet. Somewhere in my collection of HO rolling stock is an ( I'll admit it ) a St. Louis Rams boxcar. Always been a Rams fan since childhood, never lived on the west coast or midwest. But just like'em for some strange reason.

Maybe now that I have the engine, I will collect a few more NFL boxcars with my local teams , and my wife's, to pull around eventually.

Alco's Pennsy switcher reminded me of my very first HO engine, a Union Pacific SW7:

It's a real current hog, but it still runs smoothly like it always did.

The Athearn SW7 belongs in the MRR version of Cooperstown!
How many people started on one of these or graduated to it as their first step up from a trainset!?

Not me. I never had one of these that I recall. I don't think I ever bought an Athearn until I was much older , in my twenties/thirties. I had Lime and AHM, but nothing really high line.

I bought my first Athearn bb kit when I was 16. I grew up on a Bachmann diesel flyer set (kader cake F9, 90's edition) and a crappy double diesel Life Like set. Still have my Bachmann set. The LL, future scrapyard box! Thing was cheap and barely ran!

My first step-up from my train set (after an old Fleischmann loco my grandma found in her basement) was an Athearn F7. The one on the left was my first Athearn, the right I bought earlier this year.

I actually never had one of those until a couple years ago when I bought two at an auction. I've picked up one other since then.
My first non-trainset loco was an Athearn BN GP50, with the tiger stripes on the nose. It was 1989, I think, and I got my first Life-Like set for Christmas. It came with a D&H GP38-2, which I loved, but I wanted something BN like I saw down the road at the RR crossing. So my dad picked up the Athearn on the way home from work. I still run it with pride.

Hey B77;
my first new and non-trainset unit was a D&H Alco PA, I think #17 and I wanted that cause I had ridden behind them once on the "Adirondack" out of Montreal.
The Athearn now so many years later I thought so ubiquitous. Perhaps coloured by the patina of nostalgia...

I also thought of Athearn as ubiquitous. That's pretty much all the shops around here stocked. Its only now that I find out about all the great things I missed out on, like the entire AHM product line. That stuff was gone by the time I got into the hobby.

* Here is a Reading 2-8-0 camelback. Resting alongside the roundhouse wall. It is in need of a repaint but the Reading is low on cash. I dont kmow why. This engine just pulled a long string of open hoppers full of coal down to the piers in Jersey City. frank

An old Campbell and Sons "Town" backdrop. I just tape it up to give my pics more depth, till I get my dream layout finished.

| Regarding the Athearn BB switcher above, I can also say this was MY first non-set loco. In fact, it was also a UP version. My mother bought it for me when I was about 11 (in 1976). It's been repainted about 5 times over the years, and I still have it today.

TIME FER STEAM!!! My latest eBay purchase @ $22! I now have both versions of Tyco's ATSF 2-8-0's! The seller (trainz.com) stated it had the wrong tender! The right one though.
