Does anybody follow the Menards exclusives? If you don't know, Menards is a hardware mega-store. They're new to my area, but I caught up pretty quick on the history. They stock Lionel O-scale starter sets in their Christmas section. They always have an exclusive set with a Menards car of some sort. They used to offer one or two pieces of rolling stock exclusively each year as well.

Last year they offered a SOO line set. It wasn't really something I was interested in for the price, and I never saw one on sale for a good deal after Christmas, so I passed. They also offered (for the first time, if I've read things right) two pieces of exclusive rolling stock that were non-Lionel. I know my store didn't seem to sell a single one of them. They looked cheap and cost 30 something each.

This year they have a couple neat steam sets, and the ever-present battery operated G scale set. The steam sets wouldn't be that bad, except they pack in those horrible weak 40 watt transformers. The locos aren't real beasts, but for a starter they're not bad. I got back into Lionel partly through a Target exclusive set that I got after Christmas for cheap, so I know that the low-end locos aren't that bad. The biggest problem is the weak transformer. When I run the cheap Target loco on my vintage ZW, it rocks....but I can't blow the whistle until I get a different whistle controller...but I digress..

The thing that I find really interesting is that instead of rolling stock, my store has two ultra-detailed pre-built buildings. I think they were woodland scenics brand....but I may be wrong. Whatever they were, they were well detailed and not cheap: $79---ON SALE. I really couldn't believe that in this economy, and with the hobby in decline, they would actually expect to sell these things for 80 bucks. I'm not a constant Menards shopper, but I'll definitely keep an eye on this just to see what happens.

For anyone interested, they also had straight sections of FastTrack for sale, I don't remember the price. If you're a Lionel guy and you've got a Menards, check it out.

Not that I've seen, but we've only had a Menards here for three years. I think they're going for an old-time thing.
