I just started this yesterday night and was bored! I keep a box of little odds and ends that ain't qualified for re uses or simply a needed part. The floor is 1/32" balsawood. I plan on "rusting" the majority of the junk and some will be "weathered an rusty" to give it all color.
The gondola of choice: My Ahm 40 footer.

This cars remains are 1 Life-Like american auto cut in half with the rood and wheels removed. Just gonna mist it up in paint to make it look rusty:

These are the larger chunks of scrap. The gears came out of a busted up junk cordless drill I only kept for the motor.
These are the parts that will be rusty colored and some colored rusty at all!:

Forgot to upload this! Gears are out of a trashed cordless drill ( Black & Decker, go figure ) and some rail sections. This helped me guage what I could all pile up. This will all be weathered with spray paint. The base is 1/32" plywood.

Very cool! Sure beats the open gon or the more common coal load. Have you tried using "Rust-All" on the scrap? Nothing like real rust to make plastic look rusted.

You should be able to get it at a good hobby shop. If you don't have one of those around, try direct: http://www.rustall.com/product-info
