I just picked up these tonight on ebay and got a great deal. My question is what is the steam engine, never saw one like it.

Yep. The On30 engine is a Bachmann product, just not sold by them there selves. Hawthorne sells alot of cool trainsets like that with Bachmann being the supplier.
