I have a few of the Mantua Tyco engines that have the metal trucks that are riveted together. Is there any way to open these and put them back together? I ask because I need to put some traction rings on them, but you can't get to the wheels very well with the trucks together and the covers over the wheels. Or is there some other tricky method of getting traction rings on these things... Thanks guys!

You can drill out the rivets at the bottom of the truck, which enables you to service them more completely. Trouble is you won't find replacement rivets easily, and even replacement screws (with requisite nuts) are hard to come by. But in cases where I've drilled the rivets, I've had success gluing the plates back onto the frame with sparing amounts of CA: place a drop around the rivets then snap the cover back on; seal the seam with another drop of CA on each rivet.

Alternately, you can sometimes press the plastic sideframes out of the metal plate: to do this you need to remove the trucks from the shell first. Looking from the top down, you shoudl see the plastic lugs behind the face of the truck sideframe; insert a screwdriver and press them out. This is not 100% successful, but is more often than not; if they break you can always glue them back on.

Personally I would take the rivet-drilling approach so you can clean the commutator and lubricate bearings while you're at it.

Thanks, I have a busted unit I will try drilling on first. I have lots of RC screws that should fit, but if not. It is nice to know CA will work in a pinch...
