Granted I was 7 and it was the mid 70s, but I do not for the life of me ever remember seeing traction rings on my train set, or any other for that matter. Were these standard issue that came with the Tyco engines? If so my guess is I just never noticed them.. It sure would explain why my trains had to build up momentum to get going at a good clip though.. My next question is where do I get them at a decent price, and what part number and size am I looking for? I have a couple of the Mantua hong kon engines but the rest are all PT.

Well I'll be darned. I just checked my original Sante Fe and sure enough there are little traction rings on it! I can not believe all this time I never noticed them. I do have to say though they are the same color as the brass rail almost now, lol. So now where to get some new ones?
Since mine are smooth as glass and provide little to no traction as of now. I decided to take a dull razor and put very light diagonal lines across the rings to expose some new rubber but not cut though them. And I have to say it did make a difference. Now it has at least some grab to it again. I still want to get new rings though...

Unfortunately, Chris, there are no direct replacement traction rings/tires available specifically for Tyco and Mantua engines. Some guys use Frog Snot to make them on the wheel, others turn down O-rings on a lathe. Bottom line, there's no retail source right now for replacements. You pretty much have to make your own from available rings. Some guys use those hair bands, but those aren't very precision, the one's i've found, they're wavy and inconsistent.

Well in that case I am glad mine are still there, even if I didn't know they ever were... I was thinking of something to just make them tacky again, and frog snot might just do the trick. Mine are all on very tightly, no slack or slippage luckily, so I am not taking them off as I know what will happen... But I suspect one engine I have may not have any at all, I will have to check on that one..

Tyco's 4-wheeled switcher never had tires on it. Other that that I believe they all came with tires

Ray M. used to cut his traction tires from surgical tubing and that's posted somewhere in the forum. I'd like to see how that works. I have a lot of older MU2 powered engines that have their original tires and then they just seem to throw them like a horse throws a shoe.

I checked the one I was thinking of and it was indeed missing them. Hard not to notice when they are gone. I have a switcher that is all metal wheels like u said though. actually it is the engine from a GI Joe set, but it is the same thing. Thanks for the resources for replacements. I will have to get a couple..

Some of us here used Goodies scruchies form Target and Walmart. They come in an assortment and one size will fit the PT wheel. They're not perfect but you can get them cheaply and they work ok.

My wife has those bands you speak of. Luckily I sourced some parts that have the bands still, but I am going to try the bands just for fun anyways.

I'll second what Bryan said. I have used the Calumet Trains "super traction tires" for diesels. They are catalog number 505 and you get 20 of them in a pack. Looks like my LHS charged me $6.95. It is worth calling around. A good hobby shop should carry them. They were a perfect fit.
