I'm not sure why I srarted this now. But I primered an extra SF Alco shell with out stripping it. The nose herald was removed and I roughed it up a tad with sand paper after washing it and shot it with some enamel primer I had.
About an hour later I took some Badger Flex Acrylic Conrail Blue and found the parts to my airbrush and gave it a coat. I haven't used my airbrush in years for a model so it went pretty well. I see some runs and will have to deal with them when they're completely dry.
I plan to decal it and clear it and install an MU2 drive in it and other parts once I find one or take it from one of my running Alcos.

For Gawd's sake AF hide this thread from Nickleplate, you'll give him the bends!
I've seen EXACTLY ONE CR Loco that looked good, that was a GP7 and it worked, I don't know how a RR paint job couldn't be less inpired if it was Puce but they tried!
Trust the model will come out well.

TK,
You mean the Tyco C-430 PC Green? That was kinda weird wasn't it. No idea if PC ever used a colour like that on any engine, though I think they did on some rolling stock? Anybody weigh in on that?
AF,
I had an idea, I was thinking, if I can come up with a donor MU-2 430 to work on (No NOT my 9 out of 10 Prez Seal S076, which IS FOR SALE BTW) would you take a shot at this paint scheme in exchange for my pristine MU-2 CNR Tyco C-430?

Oh yeah, AF, She's a Stunner alright!! Where's the HURL emoticon???
You know "raise" generally meanss "UP" right, as in above!?
You'd seriously compare that, what blue is that anyway, to that stunning Suzie-Q unit....?
ConRail was pandering to mediocrity, design by committee. . . shudder, a collectivists dream.
NP, where are you Pal. Tell these guys what it ws like to be ON Conrail equipment!

Federally mandated railroad, wow, what an idea.... inspiring isn't it?
The idiot Socialist Liberal goverments of Canada tried that, but of course CN now makes money and is the longest railroad in North America because, Wait, it privatized!
Largely so has Conrail in the heralds of Norfolk Southern and the CSX. Thank Gawd for small mercies!
It's not even the business model that is at the heart of my dislike it's its generic-ness, it's blandness. No character. If it ran near you and that was your exposure to rail sure I get that. My local hockey team has a 30 year waiting list for Season's Tickets to a team that hasn't won the Stanley cup since I was too young to go out after dark.
Anyway back to the point of the excercise, which is AF doing abother what promises to be another real nice version of the C-430.

Conrail is like a "hometown girl". I was raised in the heart of PRR country, and didn't really get it as a kid how cool that was. Then the PCs and the CRs on the "black locos" and then the Conrail blues arrived. I have a soft spot for those. :)
BTW Susquehannas 3000 would make a great Bumblebee in "Transformers IV". :)

The popular movies I, II, and III, about cars trucks and planes that turn into robots to help the humans fight the bad robots. Bumblebee is a Z28 Camaro. I know just enough to get into trouble with this topic.

This is a project that was started after 12 noon. It now has some decals added. I used an actual CR 430 pic as a guide for the repaint. I used the reference road number, I usually stick with 4301. I've had some fun with this today.

A bit more progress to show. I work on this in between Church, Lunch and Nap and Football. I have this marked as a good running and lighted MU2 from another SF Alco but it has some rust issues. Probably wont get the handrails on today.

Why are you dragging me into this? Pick your own fights!
Nice paint job AF, even if it isn't my favorite scheme by a long shot. I blame it on really bad memories of the Conrail years, combined with an overpowering distaste for Smurfs. If forced to choose between 80's cartoon characters, though, I'll take a Transformer over a Smurf any day of the week.

Susquehanna is located in the State of Pennsylvania no? I have a soft spot for any PA based road. I remember that I disliked seeing PC and CR take the place of PRR but what are you going to do?
Thanks all for the comments.

Very nice job!
How ironic you were working on this project...as I just stumbled across something a few nights ago while doing a search for something totally unrelated:
IHC has been ressurected in Humble, Texas...and has an Alco C-430 in Conrail available.
http://www.ihc-hobby.com/product/MP6773
The rest of their inventory appears limited, but they are back, in case anyone was looking for 'em.
Have a Good One, Gents.

Thanks fellas. Glad to see you both posting on this. TOR; I had forgotten about the C430 in CR from IHC. I have one of their CR 628s a VGN and two SF C430s. Ken I'll look at your suggestion, Thanx.
I'm going to refer to this as project "PAPA Smurf. :) Gotta love it.

Here's the history of the NYS&W. It's based in NY State, and is mostly in NY and northern NJ.

Nelson , I like that GP. It's actually a nicer CR looking blue than what I have, it may be faded which is good. Sort of puts me in mind of the EMD Demonstrator blue. If I use that badger CR blue again I think I'll add some white. I think the IMC or Model Power 6 axle is a 628 it doen't have the airfilter box behind the cab.

I read about that locomotive. BNSF traded a bunch of switching equipment to a leasing company for a group of larger GP38-2 to run on short lines and in yards. To save money they just painted over the old logo the color of the body and then painted their logo on. I guess there is a rainbow of colors involved.
On another note I have thought of painting a loco like the one in that picture just because few others may have done it.

That "relettering" happened a lot on the real thing.
When the D&H acquired some C-420 from the LV that were in the Red & Chevrons scheme D&H just scripted in a D&H in the middle of the nose design. Very tatefull, on the other hand there have been versions little better than grafitti!
I have an Athearn SW-7 I'm going to do this on, it's based on a Divorce theme!
Think how nice almost any road switcher would look in the Espee Black Widow with new letters!? I have a Hobbytown RSD-3/4 that I'd like to do that with, Big Ash Can's Mars lights on top!
