Ah, the Unimat machine. I have that one, too. Loaned it to my aunt for some years, got it back finally, but never did find all the bits and pieces for the lathe part that were with it. But I use it mostly as a mini-drill press anyway.

I have a big box of parts AMC, have to figure out what they are all.
The thing is the Unimat's parts are very different in some ways than what I'm used to using at the college; a Standard-Modern Lathe and a Brunswick Knee & column Mill. The Unimat lacks the gearbox, screw pitch cut gearbox etc. Also a compound rest. It will take a while to learn to use it. I need to find out it's limitations. I wonder if I can machine brass as in a Locomotive Frame... we'll see. I should be able to albeit slowly machine custom power trucks!? Even if all it does is allow me to enhance my machining skills from the end of my current course till the next "Machinist II" starts in the fall that will be great. Lots to earn! ;)
-Gareth PS: should add, my College has a program that allows us on Saturday's to have access to the Machine Shop once we pass "Machinist 1" to work on our own projects. That will allow me to make much larger pieces, which should prove useful! ;)

Hey Jerry:
Been angling towards this trade wise with a pal for a few years. He wanted a virtually new convection oven I had but never used which I would have sold used for $50 and I gave him my 80mm Telescope which I valued used at $50-60 so it was good for me. Didn't need the other two things so I didn't need to spend any new money. :D
