I recently came across 2 western auto boxcars at a train shop recently and picked up both of them. I know these cars are uncommon but one sold for 80 dollars on eBay recently and I'm wondering why that is and what sets these cars couldve been used in. Thanks for any info. (Both are in Mantua boxes, but I can't figure out how to add pictures)

For the boxcars, is the railroad "Western Auto" or is it an auto boxcar? Are they actually Mantua cars?

To my understanding they mightve been sold in both Mantua and Tyco boxes at the time, i don't know how they got in both though

Western Auto was a chain of auto parts stores, similar to Auto Zone or NAPA.

The Western Auto in my hometown years ago had a model train section in it. I suspect that nostalgia for our earliest haunts for trains drives the price and collectability of these cars. I bought one specifically for that reason.

Quick update: there are stamped dates on the inside of the box, i don't know if that's on ever single one though. Both say April 23rd, 1980 with 288 written in pen on the inside flap
