There seems to be a short. Do these tiny inserts on the bogie side frame
on the wrong side? One set of wheels is insulated, as seen by the white inserts,
and the other is not. Perhaps the inserts are on the wrong side? I don't want
to do too much trial and error, these inserts are very hard to put in and
very easy to lose.

BTW Da Cheez, under an intense up-close light, the lettering shows no
indication of being recalled. The rails and window sashes appear
painted (badly). So, I think it is an Aussie piece.

Have you tried turning the mechanism around? If you do does it still short?

The non-insulated wheels transfer power through the axles to the chassis, the insulated wheels transfer power through the metal wipers. So the insulated wheels and metal wipers should be on the same side.

I don't think there would be any reason to pull the wheels. You should just be able to turn the chassis around, no?
