Trying to purchase some horn hook couplers to replace some on some rolling stock I have acquired from flea markets and Marketplace.

Mix of different makes. Tyco, AHM, Model Power, etc.

How many different styles or types of horn hooks are there? I have seen some advertised as "Small Hole."
Without comparing one to another how do I know if I have small hole or regular?

Are Tyco 711 and Walthers X-2 the same and interchangeable?

Thank you in advance.

Every manufacturer seemed to use their own variation of the horn hook coupler. Some are interchangeable, others are not. The small holes (as seen on Tyco rolling stock) are probably a millimeter or so across. Athearn on the other hand used a hole that was several millimeters in diameter.

If I'm not mistaken, you can shoehorn an Athearn style big hole coupler in a Tyco truck. Honestly it's been over 40 years since I gave up on horn hooks and started to convert to Kadees as time and money allowed. While I can uncerstand the desire to "keep things original," for me operating reliability is far more important and the body mounted knuckle type couplers proved far better for yard operations where truck mounted horn hooks had a tendency to derail.

If you are interested in some Athearn style big hole couplers, I have some lying around from kits I've built.

Derailments are the bain of our hobby. Spend hours trying to eliminate them and then
more pop up.

My problem with Kadees is that they require a great amount of maintenance and repair.
They are not for everyone. Good eyesight and a steady hand are mandatory. The knock
off McHenry's, to my experience, are disastrous and fail so routinely as to be worthless.

Hornhooks get the job done, for me, and I will not fool with Kadees. Tried to do that and
it was an expensive and tedious mess.

The following video was shot while my dear friend, Crusty, attempted to win the hill at the
model train club.
