This has happened a couple times. I try to look at the garage sale thread, and I get this:

I can only see the first post, and there's that weird message.

Try reloading the page. If that fails, close all browser windows and try again.

I've only had the forum skin default like that when someone posts a link to another thread, but not when I browse there myself. Weird.

When this happened a couple of times were those couple of times within a few minutes of each other? I have a hunch what happened and your screenshot was helpful in determing exactly what the system was trying to accomplish but couldn't. Before I go any further your answer to my question will help determine if and where I go with this.

Sorry, but no. This has happened (with that topic only, I think) a couple times over the last week.
I just now tried to go back to that topic, and everything worked fine. I don't know what else to say about it. I was trying to post about an upcoming auction last week, and ran into the error a couple times. Then when I went to post the results of the auction, I got it again.
By the way....I hope I'm not turning into the complainer. I think the board runs fine overall. Just trying to be helpful.
Edit: So I've been surfing around here, no problem, for several minutes. I opened topics in new tabs, no problem. Now I just opened a tab and suddenly I'm not logged in.

No, you're fine. There's still some bugs, always will be unless I stop advancing what this thing will do.

Is there an updated version of the forum software? I run a few sites myself and know that upgrading can be deadly (BACKUP BEFORE UPGRADING!!!!!!!) but it can also be helpful.

This forum has so many modifications and customizations that is not a possibility right now. At some point I will look at different code and how to import the topics into a new system. That's far enough away that I'm not going to further the discussion on that. I also believe this forum isn't as buggy as I'm getting the impression some of you believe. The bugs and complaints I've heard of up until this point will be addressed and then I'm riding it out for a while.

This forum runs just as, or maybe even smoother than many others I've come across. As a whole, it works great, but sometimes I am a nitpicker aren't I?

I've had that same error before. There is one specific topic that causes it for me and we've had discussions here before on other solutions. I'll look for the link.
http://www.tycoforums.com/tyco/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=162&whichpage=2
"Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80040e57'
The field is too small to accept the amount of data you attempted to add. Try inserting or pasting less data.
/tyco/forum/topic.asp, line 891 "
I used to be able to see this topic, but no responses, but if I hit the reply button, then I could read the thread.

Observations - The link you posted specifies to go to page 2 of that topic. The post is 3 years old. In the past 3 years I've changed the number of posts to display on one page, increasing that number, thus reducing the number of pages needed to accomodate longer topics. Currently that is set at 50 items per page. I'm looking at that post on the sharks and it appears to be only one page long with 28 posts. I'm guessing it's a link you have somewhere or someone else has somewhere that references page 2 which no longer exists (and doesn't need to in this case).
Questions - Where are you getting that link from? I'm hoping it's a bookmark. If it's not a bookmark, is it a link someone else posted referencing that topic/post? That I can fix by editing the link to it, that is if that link is on these forums.
I don't get the same error by clicking the link you provided, this is what happens for me, no error thrown and fully formed, I'm using IE8 in IE7 compatability mode. I can try it with Firefox just for fun, but the issue is with the link being outdated.

came up when I searched for it because I had seen a similar error. even if that topic had an updated post (even being that old, it has been an active topic several times) it still would get the error. I run browse pretty much exclusively with Firefox, Win xp. and get it any machine I browse the forum via (4 different machines)

Search results huh? I'll take a look at that.
OK, just did. Search results for me are showing topics with less than 50 replies as one page, as it should. The only time I see a page 2 being available is when there actually is a page 2. That worked correctly also.
I'm of course assuming you're talking about the search engine here. Is that true?

this search yes. I looked at it again, since you bumped it. still have an error.
It's really not a biggie on my end, but just letting you know since the op had a similar one.
but I see GIC's op, but above that "Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80040e57'

OK, I think I may have finally nailed this one.
Can you all verify that you no longer get the error when you visit those topics you posted about please?

I notice that this issue comes up quite frequently for me, especially for image-rich posts.
I see this happening most frequently in GoingInCirclez' Tyco Imformation sub-forum.

I must apologize, as my old sub-forum has become quite a mess, but I've pretty much given up on it.
It was bad enough when I broke all the original photo links and had to go fix them a year or two ago. But then afterward, at some point, the back-end of this forum and/or the way it handles unicode, changed. Those posts were originally written in MS Word, and I had to spend quite a bit of time to edit and clean them to appear correctly here after pasting the text in (convert formatting to "forum code", etc etc). They looked great for a while.
But at some point something happened here, and now they are almost illegible, with random characters, missing punctuation, ruined formatting, etc. It's not at all worth the hassle to fix, again. If I did it could probably just break... again. So I'm done with "Forum Code" postings.
Most of that stuff can be found much cleaner - and in some cases now updated - at my own site. Eventually I'll get more up there. I have several drafts of other topics begun, just not finished and polished. Frankly I've wondered if the demand or interest is even there, so I've just been doing other things instead.

Yesterday I got that error message for EVERY part of the forum. Different topics, online users, etc. None of it worked for about five or ten minutes.
Maybe that was just after you made a couple of changes to the forum NYC, because everything is working fine now. Great work!

I know that... I think you misunderstood me.
When I originally made those posts, yes I had to edit them a bit for formatting, but they were fine. I'm not complaining about the original edits: it's the nature of forum posting and as you say, it's always been that way.
What really irked me, and what I am "complaining" about, is: suddenly, over a year later and for no apparent reason, "something" (I have NO idea what, mind you) happened... it's as if the forum suddenly tried to re-translate the original MS-Word-based copy-pasted code (if that is somehow still embedded in the text?) and said "Huh? WTF is this? Ah, screw it" and totally ruined everything. *I* did NOT make any changes - why would I do that to my own stuff? Why would I have ever posted it like that originally? It was all fine for a year or more... THIS happened all on its own. And I have no idea why, so I really don't feel like having to go through all of it all over again to clean it up - it's a lot of material. And with my luck, it could happen again, probably right after I spend the hours to fix it. Not taking that risk.
I realize this has only happened to me, so I've kept quiet about it, until now, when someone else mentioned the problems there. But nobody else has posted the types of "books" that I used to (hence, the use of MS Word etc to write them in the first place), so that's probably why it only happened to me, in just those posts. As I said... not a huge deal in the overall grand scheme of things. Not worth complaining about overall since everything else works OK for the most part, which is perfect for 99.5% of the users. But it's a big enough deal to me, where these types of posts are concerned, to make me abandon them altogether. But they're not central or core to the forum anyway... so it's not worth complaining about, even if it sounds like I am. Hopefully you get what I mean.

I dont know what happened and when. I'll fix that stuff up eventually. I read up on it a bit and understand what is causing it but don't know what I did to perpetuate it.
What's weird is that the actual text in the database is what you want it to be. I'll play around with a bit and I'm sure I can fix it up a bit.
Reply when you've seen this so I can archive this.
