Wow, those are awesome. The timing couldn't be better either. I was just going to post concerning these cars. I was interested in knowing how many roadnames were made. Is that the complete set? For those that aren't aware, these all have the metal sides, ladders and brake wheels along with a cast base. Only the shell is made of plastic. I've had the Crazy Crystals for a while and picked up a Bordens last week and figured I might as well dive in. Now I know what I'm in for.
Great condition, quite a collection you have.

Very nice cars Loopy, I'm going to switch gears to the 70's (I think) I found this recently. The top has a few touch up's but over all it looks pretty good. Came in the original box too.

To follow up my original post, yes, there are a total of 6 cars in this set. However, being made by Tyco means there are numerous variations. In 1955 the cars had loop n hook couplers and brass hand brake wheels. The run in 1956 continued the brass brake wheels but had NMRA couplers. 1958 saw the brake wheels turn to plastic. Originally the lithograph sides were embossed, i.e. certain areas such as the hinges were pushed out to give depth to the feature. Somewhere during the production run embossing was discontinued.
These cars were also marketed as Mantua Kits. Heres an image of one to illustrate Todds description of how they are assembled. If you get hold of a kit be very careful, the litho sides have very sharp edges and will slice your fingers like a hobby knife!

I have the Burlington, Pluto Water and Crazy Crystals. One is not embossed thought I forget which. I have a blue box for Land-o-Lakes but haven't obtained that one yet. Thanks for the date-variant rundown, Loopy!
I notice the Borden's and Baby Ruth are missing the printed outlines for the door and hinge details... is this another variant or where those roadnames all done that way?
It's amazing how similar these are to the all-plastic ones. The tooling is virtually identical save for the sides. And yet it seems odd they bothered to make them this way: all-plastic cabeese, boxcars and stock cars had been around for a while. It's as if they had problems getting the detailed sides worked out and therefore released metal sides as a stop-gap measure.
But they are certainly beautiful cars and I'll get the other three eventually...

No Tyco from me this week. I wanted to post this:
It's an Athearn auto parts boxcar. Does anybody actually run these things? I picked it up cheap for the novelty of it, but it doesn't like my 18" radius track. The truck-mounted couplers sag, and it looks ridiculous trying to squeeze around a curve. It usually derails.

I have a small fleet that I've run occasionally. They can run 18" curves semi-reliably, but do require a bit of finesse. Sagging couplers are a common problem, easily fixed by attaching a wire loop to the end of the frame to keep the coupler supported. You should also lubricate the tongue with graphite or other grease. Regardless, slow speeds are required and they will always look ridiculous on sharp curves. But they're too big to resist...!
