I prefered the Tyco version, but old Blue Box Athearn is much more reliable.

That was one of the first locomotives I had in HO, and my first Athearn. I eventually amassed a fleet of Athearn diesels including several more U33Bs. Back in the day they were cheap, reliable, easy to work on, and smooth running. In other words they were the best bargain out there.

Athearn has always been the gold standard in engines for me. I like my Varney and Tyco engines better from a visual standpoint, but if I just need something that will run reliably forever, it will be an Athearn.

Here's a trio of Tyco on my old layout.

For reliability, an old BB Athearn has my vote, too. Love those zebra stripes! Oh, Canada!
On a few cherished Tyco locoms, I've chopped, filed, and threatened Athearn chassis
into the shell to get a reliable Tyco, and one that doesn't eat up Calumet tyres.
