One of the classic model train layouts that Atlas Model Railroad Company built for others to enjoy.

Although it is a N scale layout it could be built in HO scale.

Another layout based on the Atlas one.

Different but it used the basic formula.

The front cover of my book.

These books show up at train shows from time to time.

Those Atlas track plans are well thought out. At one time I built the
Grand Trunk Eastern and an adaptation of the switching layout.
The crossing takes it up a step, as the operator(s) now have to
pay attention.

The genius of this plan goes far beyond the crossing forcing the engineers to pay attention.

Due to the design of the ramps between the two levels and the figure 8 up top, if two trains are active on the upper level, sending another train up the ramp from the lower level will force one of the upper level trains to descend to the lower level. This in turn provides far more interesting dispatching problems on both levels than a mere crossing would. There is also only one reversing loop in the plan, which means any train using it to change direction will either have to go back to the yard or run against the flow of traffic on the line. All in all, it is a fascinating, high traffic railroad built in a modest space.

WKS mentioned this layout could be built in HO. Here is an adaptation that takes up only 6X10 yet retains most of the features of the N scale layout.
