Some years ago, I was given a Rio Grande A-B set of Stewart F7s. Coupled together, they were about 5 scale feet apart which looked a bit far apart. The other day, I was sorting through some old switch motors I'd picked up at a model railroad swap meet and found a Kadee kit to close couple the Stewarts. I can't remember whether I bought the kit at the swap meet and it got mixed in with the switch motors or if they were just in that box of old stuff.

The kit converts one engine, but since the main gap I wanted to shrink was between the two units, I just put the front coupler on the front of the B unit and the back coupler on the back of the A unit, leaving the other two couplers alone.

Here are the engines with the original 5 scale foot gap. It looked a bit much to my eye.

With the new coupler kit, the gap is 3 scale feet. That's prototypical and looks pretty nice.

Here's a before and after view from another angle. I think it's a nice improvement on an already sharp-looking engine.

Looks to be in some Colorado canyon. Nice.
Close coupling much improves the outline.
