The dealer wanted $100 for it, says it works great. I offered him $50 and to my surprise, he accepted, perhaps too quickly? I opened it up and what appears to be metal motor mount falls out into my hand. Hope this is an easy fix. Well, if it works, Halleluja! It is, BTW, a Tyco product.

I don't believe I've ever run across that bus before, even searching Ebay. Pretty neat item. A VW love bus. Can't go wrong with that one. I'd say you did OK on the price.

Runs nice, but no slow mo here. Can't get it run a nickel less than the full 12 volts, she will just shudder and stall. The odd thing about model railheads: we typically want to see how slow we can go. But, I am glad to see her up and running. A Partridge Family School bus would be nice...

That's the thing about slot cars....they are made to be fast. Which makes me wonder about Tyco's Turbo Train - I wish there was more space on RETRO TYCO - then I'd devote my attention to finding one of those.

Chops that is truly wonderful. I thought my Monkeemobile and Scooby Do Mystery Machine were good, but your love bus beats them by far.
A few thoughts on running it:
Tyco used a number of standard chassis and these were often interchangeable by simply clipping them in and out. So if you are unhappy with the way the one you have works then try another in it.
With all HO cars the pick up shoes need to be clean and un-rutted. Poor pick up shoes perform worst at low speeds. All types of shoes can be obtained - some 'new' old tock and some 'after market' - but worth exploring - Try e-bay..
Magnetic attraction - The magnets under the cars that cling to the steel contact rails - As an electric roadway fan I HATE these. I am not a racer and see no point in anything travelling so fast that it looks like a shooting star on a track....and no detail or even colours can be perceived
However I realise that I am out of tune with the world here!
As well as enabling the cars to go riduculously fast and cling to the track in a limpet like manner, they also cause the cars to 'bog down' and have a minimum speed at which they will start. If I had to put money on it I would guess that this is the issue?
Try power wires clipped to the pick ups and see what sort of speed variation the motor can do when it is free of the magnetic down drag
On some makes the magnets can be adjusted to move higher in the chassis away from the track, reducing the evil! On some you can remove them, whiilst on many you are stuck with them as supplied....
On this layout - I removed all magnets to allow as realistic a speed as possible:

Although it is easier in the larger scale
