Hi All,

Does anyone here collect 1950's Varney steamers? I am looking for some close up pictures of a complete one so I can tell what parts I am missing. I know, A LOT LOL! I was told it may be a Casey Jones. Anyone know.

Not being a steam guy, I'm not sure if I will try to do anything with it or not.

Thanks
Mike

It looks like either the Casey Jones a 4-6-0 or an Old Lady Consolie 2-8-0. Get over to Ho-Seeker and have a look! :)

I think you have an "Old LAdy"

Hope this helps,

Gareth

I think, Ken, there's a few minor differences, like the apparatus atop the rear most small dome. I have to get out a Verbier caliper to check the boilers though.

hi gareth, the apparatus you talk about i believe are safety valves, the holes are there on the old lady, but like i said they are missing/lost ,penn-line decapods, pacifics, etc shared a lot in common,as did mantua/tyco,its a lot cheaper, remember these were produced with kids in mind, people back then were just grateful for something that looked good and ran well, opposed to a lot of people today who will not even pick a loco up if its the wrong shade,or has 2 rivets missing,ah the days of fun, don`t get me wrong i like the detail on modern ones, but everything has its place in time, ken

Hey Ken:

Yup, I agree, many of the old manufacturers used "bitsa" engineering to bring products to market. The genericness of them can be useful for kitbashing. I bet there have been more Varney Old Lady's and Casey Jonse's acting as standins between 1950-1970+ than about anything. Mantua would be there to, with their USRA-ish Mike. Less so with the Pacific.

Hi All,

I think mine is the Casey Jones, judging by the fire pit between the last two sets of wheels. The Old Lady does not appear to have that detail.

Looks like she needs lots of parts and work, More than I'm up for doing.

Thanks for your help guys.

Yardbird Classic Trains has all the parts to rebuild this shell. I have one, too, missing many of the parts you are, I at least have the bottom frame, but my drive wheel spokes are zamac-cracking, so are useless now. Several other sets of Varney driver wheels had split the outer rim, the zamac had expanded so badly. Anyway, if you want to try, visit yardbirdtrains.com/ybsvparts.htm . I don't have the money right now to invest in restoring the one I have, or rather completing the unfinished partial kit I have. But there are parts for it.

I would like to one day get it going, I just have other projects I'd rather work on first.
