Alex...my bad...it's AHM, NOT Cox! And yes...to your next question...Cox had the same damned mold for Champion Spark Plugs and Hooker Headers.

That was a POPULAR 50ft boxcar mold!!!

Keebler car that is black ends/top...with the tree and elf and a text bubble. It's AHM.

Had a discussion with ILUVBUDWSR, and I had this car years ago...it is identical to the Tony The Tiger boxcar mold (also AHM). Both of these cars came in small white sleeve-styled boxes, with non-descript orange text on the top, and both were from AHM promotional sets (a typical general freight consist and loco/caboose with 1 promo car).

Yes, the chassis and clips match up precisely...which is why I suspect the plant that was punching Tyco 50ft. plug doors also helped AHM, as well. CTC, and God knows who else...

The car I had years ago was in its AHM promo original box, and had an AHM chassis...I was able to swap the chassis for a Tyco, with no fitting problems.

This car is ripe for monkey business (i.e. swapping chassis and baiting an otherwise neophyte Tyco collector).

...Just don't want to see anyone get into a bidding war and make that seller a VERY happy person.

Charitable... but there was no bidding war. I got the lot at a reasonable price... and mainly for the GTE car. Even in that pic, something about that Keebler one just didn't look "Tyco" to me (as if that's a quantifiable property), and I would have been fine with it either way.

Got any more loose cars? I saw your lots - I'd have been interested in the covered hoppers, if you had more like them.

Hey-OOOOO! Good score, Tony.

There is ANOTHER Keebler up right now...with another boxcar.

I didn't realize YOU were the person who was eyeing the Keebler...Alex just mentioned the car and asked me if I knew about it.

I'm about tapped on the rolling stock, my brutha...everything I've held back for myself is red-boxed era stuff (save for a few brown-box boxcars)...all of which are destined for the airbrush booth and L&N paint jobs of various styles.

I'm doing an L&N MOW consist soon...using Tyco cars....operating hopper cars, crane car & boom tender, 50' flats, 40' flats, a single dome tanker, a bunk car (camp car) a tool car, an old vanderbilt tender converted into a water car...and possibly a few others.

I'll post when they are done. Haven't even bought paint or decals yet.

GIC, I am interested to find out the reporting marks on the underframe of that GTE 40' Box Car. I'm saying Bachmann-Kader, but don't know. Hope there is some identifying info on the underframe as I'm curious to know who offered it.

That 50' Plug Door casting is a wicked one to peg in many cases. There were too many folks that used it over the years. AHM seems to be an odd one to have it, as so much of their product line is European and that casting is classic TYCO Hong Kong. AHM does wandering into offering some Kader/TYCO like items though in the late '70s and 1980s.

Another problem is the use of the 50' Plug Door by Mantua from 1978 and later. Can't say how many times I see a state car or promo car labeled as TYCO, yet it is really a Mantua offering. There's a Western Auto 50' Plug Door up right now that is in a Mantua box and appears legit, but I thought it might have been TYCO and not Mantua...but then it could be both too I suppose.

And as mentioned, I have heard of eBay sellers switching out underframes to make a nothing car suddenly become a "RARE TYCO COLLECTIBLE!" [V] Buyer/Bidder Beware and Be Informed! [}:)]

And that's why this forum is here! Hopefully over time we'll be able to cut through it all and get the whole story together.

It't hard to do on ebay pics... but you really need to inspect and compare your Tyco pieces to get a good feel for a genuine Tyco presentation - from paint coverage and stlyes to aggravating defects that became a trademarks, etc. Like the case of the Alcan centreflow, and with IHC vs Tyco paint decoration. Even if you can't reach a 100% conclusive decision, you can at least be better able to judge a value and take a chance (or not).

Got the Keebler car today guys, and I gotta say - as far as being a "shared mold" between AHM, Tyco, CTC, et al - no way! Not a chance!

From a straight-on side view they may look very SIMILAR - but there are several clues.

And as for the rest - roof, ends, stirrups, insides - NOT EVEN CLOSE.

I will of course post comparison pics at a later date. But trust me - with a little observation you should have NO trouble telling these apart in person, or even in a marginally decent picture. [}:)]

The GTE car is an Athearn. Yeah, I totally forgot about that too.
