I have an AHM 424 and it seems to run well with a little throttle, pulls OK, isn't noisey but over heats after 4-5 min of continous running. It seems oiled ok, any ideas? Doesn't seem to smell as if it's burning up.

Those locomotives only have a 10/1 gear ratio and the cheap motor can't take the strain of pulling many cars for to long.
Following an article I saw in MR or RMC (can't recall which) I remotored one I have and added a rear drive truck.
An Atlas/Roco motor was used.

That's interesting. At one point after I got it from the Cumberland swap meet it ran, then smoked and I tried to "tune", it by oiling and cleaning wheels and the power truck . It didn't help much and sat for a while then I noticed it on the workbench tested it and it seemed to run better. I may still swap out the armature. Is there a way to get the tank sides off without cutting anything up?

To get the tank sides off, you pry the bottoms of the sides outward enough to drop the weight out the bottom. Then push the bottoms of the sides inward untill the tops of the sides clear the walkway. then the sides will pull out.
Be carefull, this is a great way to break the handrails. (I did)
