this has got to be the luckiest if not most precarious escapes for the drivers,i have seen, ken
Marlborough Junc Mass on the New Haven dated Feb 4th 1898. The collision happened on the Clinton and Fitchborough branch. A milk train hauled by 4-4-0 #234 hit head on with a snowplough pushed by two locos (one of which was 823). The 4-4-0 rode up the sloping snowplough blade and perched on the boiler of 823

One has to wonder if the crew did survive, or were injured falling out of the cab. I am frequently surprised at how reckless so many drivers were in those days (Casey Jones a famous example). I perceive a Devil-may-care, fatalistic, tendency from a surprising number of guys. I am reminded of an old film of a CNJ Camel Back flying through turnouts with the brakeman casually hanging off the pilot in a yard. Another of a large locomotive, maybe PRR, lying on its side in a rail yard.

On the pilot step there are grab irons to hang on securely. Shoot! It's not as if he were riding on the roof, going backwards with a handcar chasing the engine.

It's not as if he were riding on the smoke box hanging onto the headlight housing with one foot.
Of course, nowadays railroading is much safer. What can happen to you now that we have safety vests?
