Hi Ken. The engine is an AHM not alm. It is a Plymouth MDT
Industrial Switcher Catalog # 5001I.

You do not see too many Penn Central. Looks like he added some additional detail. Carl

That is a neat piece, but my ALM days, er AHM, are over. Too many
split gears, and when they do run, the motion is so choppy as to be
unusable. Having said that, RP has done a fine job coaxing some
life out of them.

I don't know what's up with some of y'all. I have a bunch of old Bachmanns and AHMs and they run VERY reliably well. In fact, the only gear problems I've ever had in my years of collecting old trains have been Tyco PT pinon gears. Am I lucky, or is it just that all of the HO-Scale locomotives that end up in my possession essentially "retire" to hauling 10 car-max trains around the Ephrata Valley Railroad or relaxing on a shelf until the next operating session. They're so lucky.

It'd be hard to make a general statement about AHM equipment. It was made by a number of manufacturers, probably with some better than others. The steam engines were Rivarossi and had metal gears, so no split gears, there. I know there was some Mehano stuff and what little Mehano I've had has held together. On the other hand, Chops' experience has been real, too. Since AHM is Associated Hobby Manufacturers (plural) I imagine consistency across all of them is hard to assume.
