Being in the commercial electronics field, it gives me access to quite a few pieces of hardware, both cutting-edge, and legacy. Being a Production Manager, I also get to scrap what is considered obsolete and unusable anymore. Over last summer we cleaned out quite a bit of stuff the company decided it wouldn't need. I am a natural scrounger, so scavenged quite a bit of stuff to use for model railroading, and sometimes just because I thought it looked cool. Here's some of the items I'm now going to use for flat car loads. Thought it'd be a neat idea to transform some known objects into useful loads for transporting. Here they are:

Above - these were Fiberoptic cable joiners, my company doesn't do fiberoptics of any kind, so they decided to toss out what little they did have. I got these (foreground) pieces, and found a way to break them in half easily ( they're glued together ), and with a little creativity, they're now Bio-nuclear batteries ( or transformer cooling towers, or Flabbershane Injector splitters, or whatever ). With the small decals that came with them, indicating fiberoptic lighting, thought it'd be appropriate for some kind of energy-conducting device. Pretty cool!

Above - these little intricate pieces came off a circuit board , used to shield adjustable pots, I think for some radio frequency circuits, so they wouldn't interfere with each other. I thought them very enticing to use as a load. Haven't got a name for them yet, though. suggestions?

Above - These came off a Zebra Printer motherboard, some power supply coils, RF suppression I think. Heavy and enclosed in an odd-shaped casing, I had to desolder them, but I thought they'd make wonderful Transformer loads.

Above - these are Ferrite halves, used to enclose data or power cords to reduce EMF induction. I took these out of a plastic snap-together housing. Rather plain, but still makes a good load, and they have some heft to them. I saved quite a few of these, not sure how many I'll use.

So, that's some of my load ideas using high tech electronics ( and some low-tech, too ). I've got more coming ( ideas and pieces ), it's on my project list to create an entire consist of nothing but these former bits and pieces of hardware into reliable train loads. Probably can't have a long train, as some of these have substantial weight to them. But should be a fun project this year.

Not sure but if you put some saran wrap on them and painted it a blue color (the saran wrap that is)would make a neat powerstation unit load or maybe some bridge piling castings!

in of my tricks for a great scap iron load, came to me at out club's workshop right after halloween. (that year was a slow halloween) I'm just messing around with a gondola, eating kit kats, wadding up the tinfoil inserts and placing them on the table (was too lazy to toss them in the trash till I was done with some cars) just like that stared at the wads, stared at the gon and grabbed some pliers to square off the wads...boom! instant crushed Toyotas!

the funnier thing is, when I rolled out my "scrap gon" someone asked me how I made the load, I said "I really believe in recycling!"

just me Ray... and just because I have Tyco doesn't mean I am not a model railroader

AMC,

Convincing loads. I think having a pattern of objects and colors, like you've done, catches your eye. The size is great for HO too

Thanks
