A while ago, I saw a Revell F-unit that had a box too and will buy it this weekend. Are they gear driven or rubber band driven? I looked at it but forgot what drive it is. It was near mint and the rear truck was lil' loose.

Hey Ken:

I remember that puppy being belt driven. Anyone else chime in? I think there were two versions.

Anybody know what belt would work as a stand in that'll hold up.

If I can find the box it's in I'll have to pull the shell and see which I have...

Didn't some Revell diesels have an "over and under" style gear drive on one power truck?

NCS:

That may have been a Varney, or a Globe shell on a Hobbytown chassis. Common combo at one time...

Hey B77;

thats the one I have, but it will be heading out pretty soon bound for the St. Canard & Midland. Likely be backshopped at their Kentucky shops!

F units had a drive like Varney with the motor on one truck and a big gear, at least all the ones I've seen have.

The SW7 on the other hand had a motor driving a shaft with belts turning a second shaft in the truck, sort of like some Lionel HO pieces.

The NH F unit I have from Revell has a drive system identical to the sw7 mentioned before, with the exception of a longer drive shaft in between trucks, and a plastic body instead of a metal one.

Here is a varney locomotive of identical construction to my F unit: http://hoseeker.net/assemblyexplosionvarney/varney2060kf31951pg2.jpg

Here is a picture of a cutaway of a Revell with Belt Drive

Experience at flea markets along with advice from the foum suggests that Varney is essentially the same as Varney. I'm sorry to say then it could be belt or gear driven. Good luck.

From 1956 to 1958, Revell used a Dyna Drive motor with a Power Grade clutch and a balanced flywheel drive. The Santa Fe F7 freight (blue), Union Pacific and Atlantic Coast Line SW7s were the only diesel locomotives produced with this drive. Dyna Drive locomotives are easy recognized by their heavy metal frames. From 1958 onward Revell used Varney clone drives on all their diesel locomotives.
