I was wondering if anyone here has bought any of the various Tyco Catalog CD's which are surfacing recently.
Quality, format? Any good?
What kind of copyright is there with something like that? I'm thinking about the rights of both whoever might own some sort of rights to Mantua-Tyco and the rights of the person(s) who compiled these cd's.
Wondering if I could put this stuff online.

Hey NYC, I've been dealing with a patent and I do know that on a patent, the rights are only effective for 20 years from date of application. Once that time period is met, anyone can make, use or distribute the patented item. I'm not sure if a copyright is based the same.

No, Copyrights now extend up to 75 YEARS or more, depending on a 1978 law and 1998 law change. Artists can willing give up their rights and make it Public Domain, but if not, it's way more than a patent time period, can actually be 50 to 75 years AFTER an artist's death, but not sure about commercial copyrights. It's considered intellectual property, so can not be infringed unless permission is given. Just something to check into.

From the Mantua HO Model Railroad Cyclopedia - 1953

Even before discovering this my concern was more with the people selling these CD's. What "rights" do they have to prevent me from buying and publushing on the web? Although I would of course attribute full credit and drive business their way, there will always be some that won't be too happy about it.

Well, that won't be happening on my account. As long as I'm working, which is at LEAST the next 10-15 years, I won't ever have the time to do something like that.
Since the scanning of the catalogs is already out there I'm just looking to put them up on the web for easy access to everyone. HOSeeeker has already done something like that for just about everything vintage HO ever sold in this country. I'd like to take it a step further and more interactive but only for Mantua-Tyco.
