On Saturday, went up to see my very first Large Scale Model Train show at the York Fairgrounds inside Memorial Hall. VERY impressive ( the setup, the vendors, AND the prices, whew! ). I didn't bring my wheelbarrow full of money, so I left the show having spent $14 on two HO-sized Matchbox Lesney metal tractor trailers and a 1/43 Corgi Ambulance resto project. Still, I got a lot of ideas for if I ever get a chance to do my own Garden railroad. Lionel was in abundance ( 0 gauge, not a stitch of HO ), as was LGB, MTH, Aristo Craft, and others. Had some vendors doing custom bridges, starting at $300 and up. Looking at some of the engines with DCC installed, sound, smoke units, etc. pushed some into the $1,000 range. Once passenger car set listed at $2,800. I found a couple 25-tonners I could probably afford at $100 each. Found a table with engine shells, was tempted to buy a G scale FA-1, at $30 not bad,but I decided to save my money for elsewhere. Good thing I did! here's some pictures from the show.

After checking out the modular layouts in another area, my friend and I visited B&E's Train shop in downtown York, I found one of those auto-loader ramps for automobiles to get on the tri-level racks, $10. My friend found 4 N gauge cars there he adopted. After leaving there, we split up, he headed home, and I for more shopping. I went back to a small used book store up the street a 1/2 mile, and found they had antiques and vintage records for sale. I found a record of Battlestar Galatica theme songs from the show, for $3 I had to have it. :) Also found some Conrail '80's timetables, some in plastic binders. I just bought one, it had a diagram of pantograph parts breakdown among other things. $3. Found an AMC Matador/Rebel Chiltons reference manual, had to have THAT ( I have a Matador Coupe, these books are hard to find for them ). I then left and made some rounds at the local Wal-marts and Toys R Us stores, but found nothing until I hit Ollies surplus, they had some Revell Lindberg Diecast display cases. Bought 3 of the 1/24 scale type, and two mirror rotesserie types. 30% off normal pricing.

Then, off to Shrewsbury, PA , a small town just east of York about 20 minutes away. Had a few antique shops I'd wanted to hit, but the wife usually wants to get home when traveling, so this time by myself, I had a chance to do some explorin', stoppin' and shoppin'. LOL. Found some neat train items there, post cards with trains, several foreign ( to me ) , a scottish? Talisman engine, a Mexican diesel in Chicago, Bicentennial diesels, a Plaser EM-80 track evaluator, a Rohr Amtrack high-speed train, among other interesting post cards. Found many LIonel and American Flyer trains here, too, some overpriced, some reasonable. Not much HO, what there was WAS overpriced. None came home with me. Oh well. Found some more Train Time Tables / schedules, from $1 up. Bought 4, from the '60's thru the '80s. Found one vendor had 12-issue packs of Model Railroader magazine from 1957 and 1958, $5 per year. I bought the '57 lot. Another interesting set of items were a box of small Marx mini tools, maybe from the '50's ? They had them priced at $12.50 per set, mini hammer, mini pliers, mini this, mini that. Neat! I know Marx made other toys besides trains, first time I'd seen these. Didn't buy any , but will research them to see what the price range looks like. They had about 8 or 9 sets of different tool items.

After that, I explored a bit in the area, found a little area called Railroad , PA down the road, has a small park, some railroad tracks, not sure if it's a town(ship), but signs said Railroad, PA. Had one antique store, but it was already after 5 pm. Maybe next trip thru. This was just down the road from New Freedom, PA, about 1 mile away. Definitely worth exploring again some other time.

Turned the Jeep towards home then, no more country-side crawling, hit the Interstate and passed Baltimore and DC on the way home south again. Pulled into my personal station at near 7 PM. Will take some pics of items and post later. All in all a good day for trains - now it's Sunday morning, and snowing in Woodbridge, VA ( only slight accumulation so far). Hi, Spring!

1 and 1/2 inch to the foot, or 1/8 th scale. Runs on either 7.25" or 7.5" gauge track. -.25 is East coast usage, and -.5 is west of the missisippi river, usually.

Well...as a matter of fact I DO have a project started, using a busted Observation shell, to make a sort of "half-egg" car. I cut off the broken end (flat one ), and still have 1/3 of the car left. I wanted to make a powered Eggliner "slash" Inspection car for a railroad tycoon. As of now, it's still residing in a box somewhere, unfinished and untouched for awhile. Thought it'd be a neat HO car. I guess using one in HO scale, the motor would be an EXTREMELY tight fit in that size, so probably not practical compared to one sized in G. One reason I kept mine longer, to allow motorvation room.
