The coaling towers have a shoot for filling coal cars along the side. But they are also designed for a train to go underneath them. So how did they work? What would a train be doing under the tower? Is there supposed to be a reservoir under the tracks for gravity dumping of coal? How did they get the coal into the tower? I notice a chimney like thing along the side, that I assume is some kind of elevator housing. Did they have an auger, or something like a grain elevator? What kind of power was used to get the coal up? Was it a stationary steam or gas engine?
I have a couple plasticville towers that I just painted, and now I need to know how to properly incorporate them into the layout. If I need a reservoir under the tracks for gravity feed of coal, I will make it so.
Thanks for the help!
