The last few train shows I have been to, there has been an absence of the Tyco junker engines. These are usually found in beer flats for $5 or less. The same for the AHM FM C-Liners. I treasure these for a cheap source of parts. Has anyone else noticed this?

Actually, in my last 7 or 8 show trips, I've seen nary an engine at $5 or under anywhere. The exception was that silver Tyco GG1 I got for $3, had a stuck motor brush, running ok now, needs some break-in time though. But in the northern Virginia area, I guess the dealers don't want to haul $5 engines around, when they can sell higher priced items. Usually the Tyco engines I find are priced at $10-20 apiece and in decent shape. I rarely buy any of those. So I don't know if the well is running dry, or just that dealers want to move higher priced items rather than cheap parts items. I mean, who wants to make LESS money going to the show to sell? But there doesn't seem to be any cheap parts engines in my area, at least. Not that I've seen, or I would have bought them already.

At the San Antonio show last month there was one guy with a LOAD of junkers for under $5.00. I bought a few which helped me re-motor my Chattanooga GP20. If he's there at the July show, I'll attempt to clean him out and make available what I can get my hands on, if anyone's interested. I really don't need much of it myself, but if availability of this stuff is running out, I'll do what I can to snatch some of it up.

I look for the Tyco MU powered Junker Engines for the motors, trucks, side frames and railings. It is a lot cheaper to buy these then to pay $7-$8 for just the railings on Ebay. I always buy Tyco tolleys when I find them for $5, just for the parts, as the parts also fit the Plymouth Switcher.

Last show I was at I picked up an Athearn SD 40-2 Southern Pacific Olympic Ring blue box loco for $5 out of a junk bin. It had an axil that was shorting out, once replaced ran great.
I have noticed that the excess of lower priced items are dring up. I have wondered if it is the economy as people simply can not afford the higher priced items. I for one have always looked for the fixer upper or kit to keep the cost down.

A $5 or $10 Athearn diesel has about $30+ worth of parts on it.

I noticed fewer Tyco junkers at the last show, and a lot more high-end stuff. I think even Athearn blue box locos are starting to get looked down on. One dealer had a lot of unused heavyweight F7's for $10 last time. The same guy was selling unused Bachmanns for $2 and AHMs for $5. I think there just isn't as much demand for Tyco "junk", especially with everybody going DCC.

This is probably the only thing I miss about hauling trash for a living, as it is how i acquired alot of these tyco, AHM, Bachmann junkers.

I will. LOL. Still haven't done one yet, but I have the plastic 2-56 screws to do it with now. Will try one soon.

Junker engines? Huh, somebody mention junk. Went to a train show this past weekend in New Bern, NC. I saw several junkers or such for low prices. I'll admit that seeing them in boxes under the table for 3 or 5 dollars each is becoming more scarce. But, this past show I saw: Brown box tyco C430 still in it's box $5.00. Did have some run time on it. Bachmann 4-8-4 , still in box, but with much run time, $20.00 Not exactly junker price, but, cheap for a steam engine. Mantua, 0-4-0, saddle tank, $5.00. Found a Hobbytown drive powered chassis, I think it was for a GP-20, very nice condition, obviously had some run time, along with a dual power truck Mantua F-7, the guy wanted $25.00 for the pair. I hesitated for a couple of seconds and he said, "I'll just keep them". And put them away in another box. He said he could sell the Hobbytown for $30 by itself on Ebay.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

I like fixing these engine. DCC with their circuit boards I can't fix and the engines are more costly to buy. I will stick with the older trains in both Ho and "S" ga.
