Here's a couple classic Athearn 40' boxcars I found recently. I just like the paint schemes.

These were both unbuilt in "all blue end" boxes, but I note that they included roller-bearing trucks. When did Athearn start including those as a rule? Cool thing is the RBS on the trucks appear to represent retrofit jobs, as they probably would have been in real life.
I especially love the note next to the door on the NCG car:

Translated, it essentially means "Don't Panic"...

Mantua College Inn Reefer
Metal box with cardboard inserts for the sides. Bottom is made of wood. The metal stirrups are attached with wood screws. When RTR finally came around I bet many were very happy.

Nice reefers... I especially like that College Inn car. I think the name still exist(ed) in my time, but only for frozen / institutional pizza. And it was called "Old College Inn" then, ha ha.
Those old kits certainly are a different beast to build, but a lot of fun. You should try one of the tankers if you want a "thanksgiving" experience. The old Athearn wood kits are fun too. Despite the seeming complexity, there's something more rewarding about those old metal and wood kits - even more so than modern all-plastic pro affairs.

Funny you should say that. I had the opportunity to pick up the Staley tanker kit and will be keeping that one and selling my assembled one. Should be fun. Taking apart and reassembling any of the tyco tanks is always fun. You really need 4 hands to do it, maybe more.

Wait... they made a Staley version of the older Mantua kit? I'm not talking the plastic body - I mean the version with the rolled metal tube and cast ends and dome, brass frame straps, etc. The plastic kits are easy; those metal ones are definitely a 4-hander as you say, ha ha. Looking forward to seeing it!

Since we're on the subject of boxcars, I'll add this Burlington 40 ft hi cube, or ugly duckling, as they are referred to. This is a Bachmann car that has been weathered.

This wasn't a special edition set, just two individual kits, at least one of which (MoPac) was in the older blue box without the white label area. Can't remember for certain now if the NCG is old or new. That would be funny if they were later released in a SE set though, what are the odds?

MB I believe that is one of the Lionel Coors cars. The other had me convinced they outsourced from Tyco, but nope... kader just made a dang-near-perfect clone of the Tyco's reefer. Oops.

It is allegedly hard to find, but I've seen a few. There is also allegedly a color variant of brown vs maroon roof, but looking at mine... I have no idea which it is, ha ha.
I have another beer car, this older Bachmann. I've applied a base coat of weathering to it, it's not done.

The cheese car you're talking about was another WSOR custom job, for the Sargento brand. I have that one somewhere.

I must have hit my head on the PC monitor...I'm seeing TRIPLE here...triple Lionel missile launchers...no, wait...I just got those in a Lionel lot buy. Never mind. Anyway, here's my contribution to this weeks non-pay-per-view on Tyco COTW.

Paid $8.05 for 11 cars, 8 of them Lionel HO cars. All need some work or are missing some parts, or have small broken pieces. But for the price, I got quite a bit to add to my Lionel HO collection. I believe I can now make a consist out of the cars I have. These seem to be from the '63 catalog era, along with 2 helicopter launching cars, a DSSA boxcar minus doors, a NYC aqua boxcar shell, an Alaska railroad hopper, and some sort of dump chassis. I'd say I got a pretty good deal, even for junker projects. I'll most more later.

Retrospect on a weathering project.
Tony, I saw that same Coors cars this past weekend too. Passed on it since there is already one Coors car in the collection. I'm realizing if I collect every beer reefer I see I'll run low on space real fast lol.
