Was shown this by a knowledgable collector in Allentown a couple years ago - finally found one of my own:

Most GN boxcars are all-red of course. So the black ends and roof are an obvious difference, but it gets even more interesting. The boxcar is molded black plastic: only the sides are painted.

Could this be a mix-up, application of GN masks to cars that had been pre-painted & intented as Santa Fe (red sides / black ends) instead? Or a deliberate kit-only variant?

Only the ones who were in the plant at the time know...

That looks sharp, another one to keep looking for. A lot of those that are considered rare, like this one is, I've found were the older kits. I have one of the all white Dairymen's reefers and that one was a kit.

I've heard about the kit discrepancy as well. Can't recall if my white-roof Dairymen's is a kit, but the yellow GN caboose is. Supposedly there's a white variant of the Brach's car as well, and the Milky Way car comes in two shades. I'm sure there are probably others. But it still seems weird to me that these were made specifically just for kits. I could see two different lines or production schedule set-asides, even accidental coincidences, but a deliberate choice? I that's just as plausible, but then why doesn't *every* car have a stark variant? It would be so neat to have a definitive answer.

Perhaps we can find another at an upcoming show.
