While we're on the topic of Tyco passenger sets on ebay here's an interesting one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/361776847418?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
This set really threw me off for a few minutes. The paint looks so good and the lettering font is identical to that used on some of the Tyco Burlington cars...but the equipment is such a mishmash. Two of the bodies are American Flyer and one of the coaches appears to be from a kit. Finally I read the description "hand painted and hand decals". The seller is asking far too much IMO, but if the item shipped to Canada I'd be tempted to at least make an offer...

It's nicely done. Made me do a double look. If you wanted a City of New Orleans in Tyco this one would be it.

These IC passenger cars are a mixture of TYCO and Gilbert cars. They seam to be all custom painted, and very well done. They should look great running together. Frank

Why do the Gilbert and Tyco streamlined passenger cars look so similar? Did Tyco buy the Gilbert dies? If so, why did Tyco make the cars shorter?

I love it, but as Frank would say, "I don't love it at $250." An impressive collection, none the less, but I find the pricing a little optimistic.
More in price range is a Tyco G amped up with two power trucks and a mixed string of vintage LL and Tyco coaches. Now boarding on Track 2 for Boston, South Station.
To my great fortune, I saw one of the last extant G's hauling a dog train at speed southbound on the Northeast Corridor in 1975. She was painted PC black, with a tiny little "CR" stencil on the nose. Still, nothing could disguise her beautiful lineage and awesome power. I became a G addict from that moment forward. Nothing beats a G for power and grace.

I think it's just from being developed around the same time and based on the same thing, since the Penn Line cars also look similar. That said, I think Tyco probably heavily referenced the Gilbert cars when cutting their molds (they initially subcontracted Gilbert to produce their streamline cars early on).
