4 classic and less common 62 footers - American Chemicals, CGW, Shippers Car Line and the very rare Signal Petro Chemicals. The CGW is newly restored as it had numerous missing and or broken parts - but it did come with its original box. These are among my favorite Athearn cars.

How do those track? Every long tank I have tried had issues in my yard where there are 18r turns and snap switches.

Those are big boys for sure. They are nice, I like Athearn overall. Price/Quality is about right for me.
I had a couple of these. One was a nice looking SANX in what appeared to be a chromate yellow color. You would never miss it. That one I sold a couple of years ago. I believe I may have a Burlington still. If I come across it next time I dig I'll let you know, it's not something that's going to fit into my layout one day.

I wish you'd posted this a week ago, I saw that Signal Pertochemicals car at the Louisville GTE last weekend. It was mounted to a display track base and stuffed in an Athearn box (from a diff. kit) for $10. It caught my eye to recall because it was so plain looking, and the display base and paint job just screamed "Promo Item", but I passed because these things always just look wierd to me. They're nice cars and I actually do have another one (GACX if I recall) but... oh well.

Its a pretty rare car - especially if with original box and track mount that these came on (fully assembled by Athearn). Of the 3 known special run 62' tank cars its the one Ive come across a few times - the Cities Service Car and The COOP Fertilizer ones are much harder to get (I have all 3 incidentally). Larry

I've actually painted a tank car that size!
Was an Athearn 62 foot car, undecorated.......
They used these for fuel tenders as the car says so was full of diesel fuel for the (then) new C40-8's and then was passed on to the C44-9W's, (which under CSX, they're C44-9W's were actually built on C40-8W frames!

Thanks Ken! I had too as I have a few of both types of locomotives that I mentioned above and sadly, I only have done one of these tankers and would need I think, 2 more to have the "fleet" correct!

Thanks Nelson! I thought I'd build one for the fleet I was starting to put together of the Bachmann Spectrum C40-8's, and C40-8W's...... As CSX had them retro fitted to be fuel tenders and Microscale makes the decals for them so........NOW, I need about 2 more of the same type tank car to make 2 more, and then I have to get more of the decals for them, as I have 2, GE C40-8's and 2 C40-8W's, and then I have a set of Athearn C44-9W's, and even so, I think they may have used them with the Athearn AC4400, which I have 2 of these also...

Actually busss, BN used tank cars for LPG fuel tenders for there large retro fitted dual fuel SD40-2's......SO, wouldn't be a "fantasy" completely! As I remeber seeing that in a Railroad Magazine article back in I think 1995 or 1996!

it was a special run car - not made for public sale. So its rare being that there were very limited quantities of it made. It and the ACF center flow (same scheme basically) were both made exclusively for COOP about 1974. The hopper car however was later released by Athearn as kit #1909 in 1982- replacing the long discontinued Rexall Chemicals ACF car. But Athearn didnt release the tank car. Its unknown how many were made but Ive never seen another one of these. Larry
PS Athearn made a metal "shorty" tank car in the 1950's/60's in a COOP scheme too (silver/green COOP lettering). These appear on ebay some times usually going for about 20 bucks. I have one of them as well.

I have one of these. It is silver and is a General Dynamics Corporation Liquid Nitrogen tanker. It tracks great. In fact I have a dual level 18" radius track with several turnouts and I have never once had it derail, even when going fast down hill around the corners..

I'm a bit obsessed with these. I bought a set of four from the sale bin at the club. $2 Athearn cars, all in boxes and most never used, seemed like a great deal. They're the Consolidated Gas, General Dynamics, NATX, and SANX paint schemes. All cleaned up, custom-painted hazmat plates, kadees, and the SANX one needed new ladders and axles. I patched over the National Tank Lines logo on the NATX one, dunno why... I have skipped over the CGW ones I've seen at shows because I can't make them look like modern tankers, but I've got my eye on an ACF demo scheme kit, new in box, and a 3-pack of Burlington Fuel Tender cars that're stored at the club as well. I always thought they were Roundhouse cars, though. How many different paint schemes did this come in

The schemes included: General Dynamics, ACF, San Angelo Tank Lines, CB&Q (the car is based on prototypes owned by the Burlington and GN), UP, CGW, American Chemicals, Shippers Car Line (SHPX), North American Transit, Consolidated Gas and NdeM. The 3 special schemes being Coop, Cities Service and Signal Petro Chemicals.
Athearn still makes this car as an RTR item and has done many different roadnames.

Found this thread again and figured I might as well post a correction: that publicker car is an old Quality Craft craftsman kit. I found the box for one, with the cast metal details, decals and instructions but no actual tank car.

Hey Randy - I was looking online after I picked this one up to confirm if it was indeed an Athearn or not - found a boxed AHM one exactly like it too, same number and everything. So who knows what it is? The only thing I did recognize was the Athearn wheelsets, and for all I know they could have been put on later. I really like it though whatever it is.

I always wondered if someone in Europe got a bunch of Athearn cars and made duplicate molds to produce their own. But, you would have thought that they would have at least changed the road number.

Here's what it looks like because I'm sure we're all wondering what these look like.
I know, it's blurry as heck but I really couldn't find pictures that were much better.

Here's another rare 62' tank. A UP/UTLX rendition made exclusively for Union Pacific as an employee safety award in 2001. Car was factory assembled and packaged like a blue box locomotive with foam liner and foam overlay.

That's a nice UP car.
Question for those that have complete 62' tankers: I am missing the grab rails - where does the large railing that circles the tank attach to? I don't mean the multiple attachment points, I am talking about where the ends of the wires are. On smaller tankers the wires fit in by the ladders, but these look like they form one big ring.....

See EM-1's posting to this thread on April 09 2012 : 7:11:37 PM. The bottom picture shows the end of the car. The ends of the railings come together between a couple of brackets and plug into a hole in the end of the car. It's hard to see, but if your browser has a zoom feature, it's somewhat visible when magnified.
