| Doesn't show the box end or the logo so I would really be afraid it's a fake/Athearn unit in a Lionel box

The third bid and bidder is still holding, and was placed when the loco was less than $30, so he obviously must know something. Unreal.
But I too would question its authenticity. Sparse descriptions when something is known rare (seller knows it's 1958 only but can't offer any other assurances?) always bother me.

| One of the other pictures has the box end shown. It is stamped 0585-1, which would be correct for this loco. The "L" logo is visible on one of the other pictures, but only on one side. The orange fans on the roof are correct. The loco also has brass horns, which would be correct for the period. This is the rarest item of the Athearn production for Lionel HO. The bidding seems to be high.

The orange fans should be original to all MILW GP7's from this era - Ive seen one or two Athearn issue ones on ebay as well but they never got above 40 bucks. The only difference I can really see is the L logo which is really tiny. My WAB has one on each side and you really dont notice them. Until this the the priciest Athearn pieces I had seen were the DRGW Hustlers which always seem to hit 2-300 dollars. Larry

| The Athearn production of Lionel HO left lots of opportunity for fraud. In the late 70s there were plenty of aftermarket Lionel HO boxes available. Also, there were at least two individuals who were stamping the Lionel "L" on Athearn items. That being said, I think this one is authentic. Would I buy it? No. The price seems to be high and it is a item that I would only buy hands on.

The guy is not a Newbie, been around for awhile it is the same Guy who won an auction a few years ago for a Lionel Husky AEC NBC Desk set that went for $22,009.09 Which in my opinion is the most for any HO item on eBay and possibly the most for a Lionel HO Item.. Just someone who sets his sights on something and is willing to go the distance to get it. Also has the Money... It's the Old Story. Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it... Hopefully someone will be willing to pay him what he paid, when he goes to sell ..

In that group of Lionel Ho that seller was listing. There was a Lionel Ho FM- Southern Pacific was bid up to 772.00 before the auction closed. I didn't see the closing price though- UNREAL!!!

| ...by the same buyer as the Milwaukee engine, from another single, very early bid. Guess this stuff is as rare as claimed, and someone is determined - and of enough means to make sniping an unnecessary frivolity.

| The Rivarossi Consolidation (in the orginal box), the SP, CNW, Texas & Pacific C liners and the Milwaukee Road GP-9 are the high $ Lionel HO items.

Holy ****! The closest I've seen to that was a pair of Lionel / RR dummy C-Liners in what must have been a rare roadname go for over $900, and that was back before the economy tanked.
I hope it comes with rubber bands at that price.

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

DAMN! I got better things to do with a grand or more around the house, never mind trains and if I HAD that type money, I'd be buying a Lionel B&O EM-1!

I got the likely more rare than that IMC train set (pictured in ohter threads here) - one of the most sought after Athearn items - for less than HALF that final bid price. I doubt Ill ever be seeking one of those out unless by sheer luck I find one at an estate sale... Larry

The IMC Athearn set is much more scarce than the Lionel Milwaukee Road GP-9. However, there is a much higher demand for Lionel HO than Athearn.
Keep hunting, it is the kind of item you can get cheap. A lot of sellers think it is Athearn and are not aware of the little Lionel Logo.

you rarely see the Wabash GP7 either. I generally avoid the Lionel Athearn stuff simply due to the inflated prices.

| Sometimes people fight for stuff. I picked up a MIB regular Athearn GP30 dummy, which was kind of odd in that it was in the shortest Athearn box and just fit it - put it on eBay and it went off for $71. So I've been sitting on another one I picked up waiting to find a good UP shell for it.
