Anyone have that Krause Athearn guide handy can tell me how rare this version is? 40' Chemical tank car, silver body, red Allied Chemical logo and National Aniline on the right, big Actol on the left. Since we moved my copy seems to have dissapeared. I know there's at least one of these that's pretty scarce; I have the Genetron/Allied/General Chemical version and have never seen another of those either.

Said to be the most scarce AThearn production freight car ever made. 1962 was the year they ran these. Discontinued due to mold problem supposedly. I just got one off fleabay for 99 cents... (not in perfect shape but very good and Athearn still stocks all the parts needed to restore it). Larry

Update. do check the car number. NANX 151 is the rare one. AThearn rereleased this car sometime after 1997 with car number NANX 152 kit # 1555. The original car was kit #1554 and yellow box only. Larry

Here's both kit releases together: NANX 151 in front is the original car and NANX 152 coupled behind is the newer one. Larry

Hi Larry. Actol chemical tank car released in the 1990's nanx 152 is also cataloged as 1554 same as the earlier car. 1555 is Frontier Chemical. The nanx 151 was made up to the 1970's. It was re released as were most of the Tank cars in the 1990's with different road numbers.
The only one that they did not change was the 1556 Celanese Green Tank. For some reason they used the same road number as the early run 39617.
I have most of the Chemical tanks and a few Tanks that were never cataloged. I have them in yellow and Blue and RTR Blue Window boxes. You are right most of the early Chemical Tank cars are hard to find, the Actol is the hardest to find intact. Just like you, I just got a Actol tank last week at my LHS it was broken and missing everything. But, the main body was intact. Getting together all the parts to restore it.
If you want another hard to find item try 1269 Reading Caboose made only for a few years they discontinued it and reissued the 1269 number to a Santa fe caboose. 1269 over the years was used for 3 different ATSF cabeese. For over 30 years they never made another Reading caboose. Athearn now makes a Reading caboose in their High priced RTR line... ..
Also you memtioned GP30. A few years back we had a post about them. here is the link:
http://www.tycoforums.com/tyco/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=306&SearchTerms=gp30 It is a interesting and fun read. Also you will see a Reading GP30 with the 1269 Reading Caboose.
Will post pictures of the Reading caboose some other items have to dig them out.. Carl

HMmmmm. ya sure? Acording to the standard guide the Actol tank was only made for a short time and was supposedly (at the time anyway) sought after by collectors. The kit box for NANX 152 has #1555 on it. I'll add a pic.
Larry
PS I know some of the special promotional run tanks were definitely rare. Including the Genetron one.

Larry, it looks like you may have a error box. The Guide has them listed 1554 Actol and 1555 as Frontier Chemical doesn't make sense to Switch numbers around. It wouldn't be a first time Athearn screwed up. . I did not buy too much of the newer run kits. I have mostly he early kits. More fun collecting them. Carl

Was just checking my Athearn and Walthers catalogs between 1990 and 2001. The Athearn numbers listed go from 1553 to 1557 They skip over 1554,55,56. I know the new run of 1556 is the Celanese Tank. I did not buy the kit because the road number was the same as the early run. So that leaves 1554 & 1955 It would not make sense that they would change the numbers, since all of the other cars in the Chemical Tank series are the same kit numbers as the early runs. I do not have any Catalogs of Athearn or Walthers from 2001 to 2005. Maybe there might be some info in one of those catalogs. After 2005 Walthers does not mention any Athearn items anymore in their Catalogs. On Line, Athearn has removed all info about Blue box Kits. So the search Begins

I just picked up another one of these - mint/unassembled in the early blue box with the blue contents panel. Obviously Athearn made these for a few years in the first run. Larry

Here are both the Genetron and Actol (original release) chemical tanks together. For those on here who own a copy of the "Standard Guide to Athearn Model Trains" - the Genetron car is the very one pictured on page 63. The former owner is a long time collector selling it off now. I restored it with new parts. Larry

RE: Celenese tank car rerelease: they did the original road number (39617) the first go round when they brought it back - but at least one possibly two other road numbers were released later. I just picked up an unassembled kit with road number 39618
