HobbyLine Union Switch & Signal Gondola.

I had never seen this car before getting it. Not sure how common it was during HobbyLine's years but I can't find it listed anywhere in their catalogs. Car is very light, no weights, all lightweight plastic. A load with some lead in it would cure that issue.

You don't see much for Union Switch & Signal at all in HO Scale. At least I haven't. That is surprising to me since this company is everywhere railroads are. The company started in 1881 and still exists today but recently changed names. It was orignally put together by Westinghouse, he pretty much bought up all the companies building railroad signals and switching equipment. What choice did they have, sell or be put out of business.

US&S is the company behind Copenhagen, Denmark's automated urban rail system. Quite a remarkable system that has far exceeded all expectations. You can learn more about it here.

http://www.welcome-to-my-copenhagen.com/copenhagen_metro.html

There's a link on that page to a video of the system and the tour guide alone would be a great reason to visit Denmark.

Another of my recent Gilbert acquisitions is now appearing in COTW. Found this at a LHS, nice shape. Trying to build up a Gilbert consist, I have maybe 3 or 4 cars ( coal hopper, reefer, flat, and ?). Will keep looking for them until I have 7 or 8 cars.

The annual Great Train Expo in Louisville was this weekend... not nearly as bountiful as past years, but I found some nice stuff nonetheless.

Favorite find would be this Tyco operating hopper that someone expertly painted in Chessie colors. $3.00? No-brainer!

The FMC centerflow is another score. Unassembled Front Range kit for $6. I used to walk past one of FMC's plants every day when I snuck through the Belt Railway Co. of Chicago's Clearing Yard en route to high school...

Union Switch & Signal gondola was produced in 1955 or 1956 right before the bulk of Hobbyline was sold to Lionel. The gondola was uncataloged and quite rare.

I have two of these in my fleet. One of them came with the loader and unloader with a bulldozer and forks that lift them off the flatcar.

Union Switch and Signal was a very active company from around 1870 to from your information . I has seen their name mentioned in a few old publications. I do know they has a design and supply center building in South Easton PA in with the Lehigh Valley railroad maintance buildings. Probably did all there, the LV, work back then. I have the same car by HObbyline. I haven't seen the name used anywhere else. I have a photo of LV 245 a 4-4-0c camelback pulling the Black Diamond during there early runs. A signal system pole 383 was numbered and the number placed the location of the photo in the south end of the Rochester branch a few miles north of Rochester Junction. I found this looking through a number of magazines. Cassier's Engineering Magazine. I was looking for railroad related stuff and in a 1905 volume of Cassier's. At the time I was building a LV 4-4-0 camelback. I hit page 251 and a article started on railroad signals systems in America. The article seemed to be about US&S systems. On page 261 there was the photo of LV 425. At the time I was very familiar with the 4-4-0 's of the LV and this loco was one of the class I was building and no other photo I knew of existed of #425 named Rollin H. Wilbur, class E-48. It was quite a find .
Well that is how I found out about US&S . and yes it is a interesting car.

Some fine cars and photographs and interesting discussion regarding US Signal. Could be quite fine to model some US Signal operations. That's a fine build on that caboose Ken and I'm diggin' those trucks. Did you build that?

Those are Fox trucks. They were popular from about 1888 to 1910. Appropriately for this model, the NYC was the first major customer for them. This site contains some info on the trucks:

Ken, I also like that caboose.
