I recently retired from AT&T and am ready to get back into model railroading. I have some old equipment from the 60's - mostly Tyco HO trains and Aurora HO racing set. I also have some SAKAI steam engines in HO scale. All trains have hook and loop couplers and I am wondering if it would be better to sell them off and buy new Atlas or Bachman cars with prototype couplers on them or retrofit the old cars. Am still testing engines to see if they run.

Hi revrik,

Welcome to the group. Congratualtions on your retirement. As far as the hook and loop couplers go. If it was me, I would keep them as is and just run them as a set. Then you could figure out what you want to do with any trains you pick up in the future. I like to keep old trains as original as I can. but thats just me, LOL.

P.S. feel free to share some pictures of your trains with us.

Well, only if you are tight for money. Why not keep them as is, and just buy new? The older types have their nostalgia with originality, and would be fun to show off on occasion. I like keeping all kinds of equipment, from the original to modified. If you're tight on space, I can see not keeping something you don't want to use or display. You can also replace the loop and hook couplers for the newer type, I believe. And always return them to original later.

There's also those of us on here that like the slot cars as well. Glad to see another dual interest member show up here. Those Aurora brushes are a perfect fit for the '70's Tyco Power Torque motors, which have few parts sources, so they're helpful to have on hand for repairs. I have some old Aurora and Tyco slot cars, as well as some Matchbox, Ideal, Revell, and others. Show us some pictures sometime of your collection(s).

Hello & Welcome!

I too, like to keep my Tyco just as they was when new. I had soo much fun with the Tyco trains & slot cars in the early 70s, that I just had to buy a bunch again. I keep all of my trains & slot car pieces original. I don't have the heart to change any of it!!

Welcome revrik!

I'm still in the process of building my original layout (Tyco) from the mid-70s and have pondered the coupler change to my old tyco rolling stock. I like the idea of leavin' em stock with maybe one car having both style couplers so I can include some of the newer cars I just acquired! I too have slot cars, Tyco & AFX, but these are packed away for now.

Show us some pictures!
