| yeah, the numbers on the cab are 5628, but the numbers above the cab, the number boards ( i think they are called that) are 4301, like from a c-430.....

sounds like you have a tyco red/brown box 5628 ,the 4301 0n numberboards may be rare but it could be that originals fell out and were replaced with them,i will leave that to the expert, who i would think will confirm 1 way or other ken

Thanks Ken,
I got it off ebay today for $6 so I will look when it gets here to see if the number boards were replaced. I only ask because AF-kid posted on here under tyco motive power, that one of the rare items is a C430 with 5628 on it instead of 4301. I dont know if thats the # on the side or number boards... I have the opposite of course and "mistakes" are usually worth more than original.

I'm of the opinion that it could be a unique model, but the only way it would be a certified factory goof - and thus a bonafide rarity - is if it were still sealed in factory shrinkwrap. Which not all locos received in the first place.
The sad fact is it is entirely too easy for the boards to be swapped after the fact, and you couldn't prove who did it and when.
Now, if the painted number on the cab were different, that is a bit harder to fake and might be worth looking into. There are in fact a few locos where this occurs: Penn Central 430's can be found with 5628 on the cab; I consider these scarce enough.
To date I'm not aware of a GP20 with 4301 on the cab, but the existence of such would not surprise me.
The only verified number board "goof" I'm aware of is the original Spirit of 76 C430, with the full president's seal. The very first run (if not all) of those was made before the custom "1776" boards were ready. Curiously they got 5628 boards instead of the usual 4301 for the loco model - I guess Tyco was still trying to mark them differently via whatever available means? Yet enough of these have been seen - including my own fresh-from-a-mint-box example - to quantify it as a factory "error" of sorts. But the paradox there is that the quantity of like examples is what gives it provenance - while simultaneously preventing the term "rare" from applying.
BTW Tyco gave the GP20 the number 5628, because that was the number of an official EMD Demo GP20. Same too for Alco's Demonstrator Century 430 #1.
