Motor from the all-diecast 0-4-0 switcher I picked up over the weekend is basically shot. It barely turns out of the engine and slows down while doing so. Cleaning/oiling doesn't help. Partly because the PO (or more likely the PO before that) soldered the wire to the spring post and ruined the temper of the spring. And also broke that fiber wafer it's mounted on. So basically I can't get enough tension on one of the brushes.
Anyway, I noticed this at Radio Shack:
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102827#
Think this will work to remotor? The attractive aspect is that I can get it on the way home and fiddle with it tonight rather than ordering something.
Also, I've got a bunch of small motors pulled from old VCRs and CD players; I know some of you have used these. While I don't actually know what the numbers on the labels mean, I get the impression they're 5 volt motors. Is this generally the case? I suppose if I smoke them I'm not really out anything (especially since they came out of my ex-wife's equipment).

| I've looked at those, but never wanted to actually pay for motors. As for the voltage, I've had no trouble pushing them to normal track power. Half throttle usually gives plenty of speed anyway. I agree with the notion that you've got nothing to lose if you got the motor for free.

Sorry your train is shot. It happens. <sic>
I actually bought some of those Radio shack motors to do what you want to do ( some years ago)...but I never installed any yet. But they should work ok voltage-wise.
Depending on the CD, the tray motor is probably 5-6 volts. The spindle drive motor, though, may be a higher voltage. Most CD's have two motors, one to open the tray, the other drives the spindle. Well, and a third stepper motor for the CD read head. Not really useable without a stepper circuit. Anyway, you won't lose much trying them. Basically, if the motor won't rev much more beyond 5 or 6 volts, that's all it's got, and I wouldn't push it further. If the rpms keep climbing, then it should run on 12v ok. Good luck with your project, and let us know how it goes.

Thanks guys. The free option seems to make most sense right now. If I'm going to give someone money, I really hate for it to be Radio Shack. I still shake my head over the time I went in and they asked if they could help me. I already knew the answer was no because it's always no, but I told them I needed a potentiometer. "Oh, we don't carry those." I walked over and grabbed one off the wall, blew the dust off of it, and brought it to the counter. "Oh, we must have just gotten those in." Yeah, mmm hmmm.

Radio Shack used to be cool, the local guy really knew his stuff. Those days are gone. The last straw came when I was shopping for a shortwave radio few years ago:
Worker: "Can I help you?"
Me: "I'm looking for a portable shortwave radio."
Worker (points to small AM/FM unit on shelf): "Uhh...this radio is pretty short..."
I still go there for lack of anything else, but I always have to find things myself. The staff is clueless.

Is that a mall Radio shack? LOL. They probably cater to the kiddie crowd of game freaks. Most of the 'shacks in my area seem to be pretty cool, and the staff helpful, if not always totally knowledgeable ( experience - looking for a micro-SD card USB thumbdrive, young guy said No they didn't have any - I found the AT&T phone section, and low and behold, there's one for $10. So I always take No from RS staff as I'll just look myself anyway. )

There is no Radio Shack anymore. Now it's only a shack.
Their sales associates ask if I need help and when I say no, they follow me around as if I were going to swipe something. I no longer shop there. I just use Mouser, Digikey, Arrow & Newark for my electronics components.

I take it you are talking about the Shifter 0-4-0? I have plenty of replacement motors with the worm gear on them I do not use. PM me your addy and I'll send you one. They are all new, and unused.
Ship it Texas on the Lone Star Route!
