I pulled this off of the top of my neighbor's trash can. It's the dirtiest engine I ever had and it has a split drive gear on the axle. I pulled the body off, gave it a quick scrubbing & lube. The motor runs great and I'm waiting for Yardbird Trains to get back to me on a replacement gear. When I clean it up, paint it and replace the rails, it should turn out a pretty nice little lokie.

Nice save! Those Varney little Joe's are hot little items on Ebay, been watchin' a few, hard to get one for under $30, even grungy ones. My hot acq a few months ago was a Penn Line Midget, they didn't list it very well, and I got it for a reasonable price. Be cool to see your Joe chuffin' along again.

I like restoration projects! You got a gem, there. You could also use more realistic handrail posts. That's one of my favorite detail items to add. Yardbird has them, Part No. D101.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

Wow, kool ... I'm still disappointed that it isn't a Varney, but I'm glad that I have some options. I can see where I could easily spend more than this lil engine is worth, but I didn't pay anything yet and at least she won't end up in the land fill.
I think she'll end up at a coal mining company at the Pottsville, PA end of my line.
Thanks y'all!

OK, after weeks of searching, I could not find a direct replacement gear for this lil' lokie, but I did find something close at https://sdp-si.com/eStore/
You can see the split in the original gear on the right.

In this photo you can see the difference in the width and diameter.

The new gear is a little larger in diameter, not quite as wide and the hole for the axle is slightly larger. Now, I hate to admit that I did this, but it worked. I used the Ernst Gear Kit method of enlarging the axle diameter by wrapping a small piece of Scotch tape around it. The new gear fits ... so far, so good.
With the engine reassembled, the gears were binding a little bit, so I shimmed the bottom plate, which happens to hold the axles in place, under the front mounting screw using a fiber washer left over from a Kadee coupler. This thing runs really good now! Next, I'll trim the scotch tape off of the axle and secure the new gear with some epoxy. After that, I'll clean up the flashing from the poor molding job, paint it, detail it a little bit and install some LED lighting.

You could just toss a number on it and weather it a little. Claim its your mine/yard work horse! I have a engine or two I might do this too since they are kinda odd balls and I can't find any good railroad prototypes to match them up too. I'd rather just give them a vauge idenity and use them in MOW service

What about using a tube slided over the axle to fit the gear?
Maybe you have to make a groove into the tube if it´s to large.

The tape is necessary to enlarge the axle diameter evenly, to ensure the gear is centered and true to the axle centerline. One caution with this approach is to make sure the tape ends align with each other at the seam through the layers. and do not overlap.
That said... tape COULD wear. So what I would do is cut the strip of tape to be slightly narrower than the gear. Center the gear over the tape, and you should then have a small gap between the gear and the axle on either side. Fill this gap with epoxy or what have you, and that should be a much stronger repair with less likelihood of wear and slippage. Haven't tried this myself, but it seems like it should work.
Good job on the resurrection!

Yeah, I was thinking a satin or flat black.
I'd still like to come up with a whimsical name to put on it. I don't care if it's a fantasy name or not.
I couldn't find any tubing that would work without causing a lot of extra work.
I actually left a 2mm gap between tape ends to prevent wobble on the gear. That's a good idea to trim the tape so that the epoxy goes beneath the gear. Thanks!
I'm probably going to order a few more of these gears for spares in case of another breakdown.
Thanks for the comments you guys!

After looking at these little engines, I dug out my stash of junkbox Rivarossi engines I'd bought from my club buddy last year. I have one exactly like these here, mine says Rivarossi Como-Italia 1051 on the bottom. The fairly complete one has a broken off step in back, and a spare shell is in better shape except for the rear step area, which is broken worse, and the smoke stack is cut back some. Now all I need is the drivers and rods to complete one.

I may have to try those Lifelike wheels and rods to get this Rivarossi back running again.
BTW, I noticed the center of my front engine door had 98 imprinted inside it. Do any of your versions have a number printed there in front?

Yup, mine is 98 and I believe that the Varney is also 98. I've seen photos of B&O's 98, like this one:
