Since I moved, I no longer have the luxury of a dedicated train room, so I've been looking into options for a portable layout. It's hard for me to think small and I don't like N gauge, so I started goofing around on CAD a few weeks back. How the heck am I going to get a passenger line, a freight line and a trolley loop built into something that I can move easy and not end up with a pizza box sized layout???
Then I stumbled on these parts made by http://www.paheritagemodels.com/ and an article on how to use it, here http://rrmodelcraftsman.com/reviews/cm_extra_pennsy_trackinserts.php
So now I'm thinking big again, but in three small pieces. I'm just in the idea phase, but I think I can learn to be happy with something smaller. It's better than having everything packed away where I can't use it.
I'd like to do a small chunk of Philadelphia on the first module, Reading, PA on the 2nd and then Pottsville, PA on the 3rd. Just a small tribute to the route that I used to ride on Reading Lines.
With some tweaks, I can get a lot of my stuff on this, including the trollys. The beginnings, without the planned turntable:
