I'm tired of paying a premium for TYCO US-1 bodies.

I'm considering using this...
http://www.alumilite.com/ProdDetail.cfm?Category=Starter%20Kits&Name=Super%20Casting%20Kit
... and casting my own.

Does anyone have any experience with this brand? I've worked with fiberglass before and plaster molds- just not silicone molds.

I'd need to make 3 truck bodies to recoup my investment and 4 to get ahead.

Eventually, if I can create good enough mold and good truck bodies- I may even list them on Ebay for other die-hard US-1'ers.

No experience with that brand, but I've done a lot of things at work using products from this company and they're VERY helpful. They even have how-to videos:

I do loads of work with Alumilite. The RTV rubber is great. But I don't recommend the resin, it sets up way too fast! The resin gives you about 90 seconds working time. But that also must include the mixing time, (which usually takes me about 30 seconds!). 60 seconds or less doesn't leave much time to pour and get out air bubbles.

I usually use Micro-Mark CR-600 resin. I don't care for the white color of the hardened resin and may try adding alumilite's resin colorings. But the great thing about the CR-600 is it gives you about 20min working time!! And the CR-600 works just fine with the Alumilite rubber molds.

Just did a forum search for casting, and wondered if casting the US-1 bodies ever worked out? I have used the alumilite for a number of years for plastic models/gaming figures, etc., and like the quick-set of the alumilite for certain train parts; side tanks and side frames, specifically. The tanks can be tricky; you have to make a two-part mould, with good venting, and it does need to set quickly with the thin-sidewall. I don't get them all, but most turn out okay with a little cleaning/sanding/filling. I have also used the micro-mark and smooth-on (at work), and they are all good product. Never tried the micro-mark in the alumilite mold, but I will keep that good tip in mind when I need a slower cast-time.
